In microeconomics, we studied individual units (consumers, firms) and price determination. In macroeconomics, we deal with aggregate variables like total output (GDP), inflation, and the economy as a whole.
1. Some Basic Concepts of Macroeconomics1. Macroeconomics के कुछ Basic Concepts
Goal:Classify the goods produced in an economy, understand the production boundary, and distinguish between stocks, flows, and depreciation.
Analogy (जल-टंकी का उदाहरण):A water tank represents a stock (measured at a point in time), while the water flowing from the tap is a flow (measured over a period of time).
Every year, thousands of goods are produced. To make macroeconomic analysis simple, we classify these goods into final and intermediate goods based on their end-use.
Final Goods vs. Intermediate GoodsFinal Goods बनाम Intermediate Goods
Adapted from NCERT Section 2.1 — Classification of Goods based on End-Use
Final Goods are those meant for final consumption by households or investment by producers. They do not undergo any further transformation in the production cycle and are outside the production boundary line [NCERT p.10].Final Goods
Intermediate Goods are goods purchased as raw materials for further processing or for resale in the same year [NCERT p.10]. They remain inside the production boundary line and lose their identity.
Final vs. Intermediate (End-Use Rule):A good is classified as final or intermediate based on its end-use, not its physical features:किसी वस्तु का final या intermediate वर्गीकरण उसके end-use (अंतिम उपयोग) पर निर्भर करता है:
Milk bought by a household is a Final Good, but milk bought by a sweet shop to make sweets is an Intermediate Good.
A computer bought by a firm for office work is a Final Capital Good, but bought by a dealer for resale is an Intermediate Good.
Why are intermediate goods excluded from National Income?
They are excluded to avoid the error of double counting [NCERT p.17]. The value of intermediate goods is already included in the value of final goods. If we count them again, the same value is added twice, artificially inflating the national output.
Final Goods (अंतिम वस्तुएं)
Intermediate Goods (मध्यवर्ती वस्तुएं)
End-Use
Used for direct consumption or investment [NCERT p.10].
Used as raw materials or resold within the same year [NCERT p.10].
Production Boundary
Outside the boundary line of production.
Remain inside the boundary line of production.
Value Addition
No further value is to be added. Ready for use.
Some value is to be added (transformed).
National Income
Included in both National and Domestic Income.
Excluded from National and Domestic Income to avoid double counting [NCERT p.17].
Capital Goods vs. Consumer GoodsCapital Goods बनाम Consumer Goods
Final goods are further sub-divided into:Final goods
Consumer Goods: Purchased by households for direct satisfaction of wants [NCERT p.11]. These include:
• Durable Consumer Goods: Long-lasting goods (e.g. televisions, cars, refrigerators) [NCERT p.11].
• Semi-Durable Consumer Goods: Lifespan of around one year (e.g. clothes, shoes).
• Non-Durable Consumer Goods: Single-use goods consumed immediately (e.g. food, milk, LPG).
• Services: Intangible activities (e.g. medical advice, teaching) [NCERT p.11].
• Semi-Durable Consumer Goods:
• Non-Durable Consumer Goods:
Capital Goods: Durable fixed assets used by producers in production for several years (e.g. tractors, heavy machinery, buildings) [NCERT p.11]. They undergo depreciation and require replacement [NCERT p.11].Capital Goods:
Producer Goods vs. Capital Goods:Producer Goods बनाम Capital Goods:
"All capital goods are producer goods, but all producer goods are not capital goods." Producer goods include both single-use raw materials (e.g., coal, wood used in factories) and durable capital assets (heavy machinery). Capital goods only refer to the durable assets that do not get consumed in a single production step."
Are all machines capital goods? (Machine Test)
No. A machine is a capital good only if it is used by a producer for generating further output. For example, a sewing machine used by a housewife at home is a consumer durable good, whereas the same sewing machine used by a tailor in a commercial shop is a capital good.
Concept: The Production Boundary Lineअवधारणा: Production Boundary Line (उत्पादन सीमा रेखा)
Consider a shirt production cycle:
1. Farmer produces cotton worth ₹200 (inside boundary).
2. Spinner converts cotton into yarn and sells to weaver for ₹500 (inside boundary).
3. Weaver converts yarn into cloth and sells to retailer for ₹900 (inside boundary).
4. Retailer sells the finished shirt to consumer for ₹1,500.
Once the consumer buys the shirt for final use, it crosses the production boundary line and becomes a final good. At stages 1, 2, and 3, the goods are intermediate goods.
Flows
Economic variables are measured in two ways depending on the time dimension [NCERT p.18]:Economic variables को समय के आयाम (time dimension) के आधार पर दो तरीकों से मापा जाता है [NCERT p.18]:
Basis (आधार)
Stock Variables (स्टॉक)
Flow Variables (प्रवाह)
Meaning
Measured at a specific point in time [NCERT p.18].
Measured over a period of time [NCERT p.18].
Time Dimension
It has no time dimension (static concept).
It has a time dimension (dynamic concept, e.g. per month, per year).
Examples
Wealth, Capital, Bank Balance on 31st March, Money Supply, Water in a tank, Population of a country, Foreign Debt [NCERT p.18].
Income, Savings, Investment during a year, Consumption, Interest Earned, Flow of water from a tap, Birth Rate, Foreign Aid [NCERT p.18].
Depreciation and Net InvestmentDepreciation और Net Investment
This reduction in the value of fixed capital assets due to normal wear and tear, passage of time, or expected obsolescence is called Depreciation (or Consumption of Fixed Capital) [NCERT p.17].
If we deduct depreciation from Gross Investment, we get the actual addition to capital stock, called Net Investment [NCERT p.18]:अगर हम Gross Investment में से depreciation घटा दें, तो हमें capital stock में वास्तविक वृद्धि प्राप्त होती है, जिसे Net Investment कहते हैं [NCERT p.18]:
Fall in the value of fixed assets due to normal wear and tear, expected obsolescence [NCERT p.17].
Loss of value due to unexpected obsolescence, natural calamities, or accidents.
Provision
Provision is made using a Depreciation Reserve Fund.
No provision is made; it is an unexpected loss.
Production
Does not hamper the production process.
Hampers the production process directly.
Section Summary:सारांश (Summary):
Goods are classified as Final or Intermediate based on end-use, not physical features.
Final goods = Consumer Goods + Capital Goods.Final goods = Consumer Goods + Capital Goods।
Stock = measured at a point in time; Flow = measured over a period.Stock = जिसे समय के एक point पर मापा जाता है; Flow = जिसे एक समय की period के दौरान मापा जाता है।

2. Circular Flow of Income2. Circular Flow of Income
Goal:Understand the circular flow of income in a 2-sector economy, its three phases, and the role of leakages vs. injections.2-sector economy in circular flow of income
Analogy (रक्त परिसंचरण का उदाहरण):Just as blood flows continuously through the human body, income and spending flow continuously between households and firms in an economy.
The circular flow of income shows how economic activities cycle between production, income distribution, and consumption [NCERT p.14].Circular flow of income
Real Flow: Households provide factor services and Firms provide goods.
Adapted from NCERT Figure 2.1 — Circular Flow in a Simple Two-Sector Economy
Three Phases of Circular FlowCircular Flow (Phases)
According to Sandeep Garg, the circular flow operates in three recursive phases:
Generation Phase (Production): Firms produce goods and services with the help of factor services [NCERT p.14]. Value added is created here.
Distribution Phase (Income): Firms pay factor payments (wages, interest, rent, profits) to households in return for factor services [NCERT p.15].Distribution Phase
Disposition Phase (Expenditure): Households spend their factor incomes on goods and services produced by firms [NCERT p.15]. This spending flows back as revenue to firms.
Real Flow vs. Money FlowReal Flow बनाम Money Flow
Real Flow (Physical Flow): The flow of factor services from households to firms, and the flow of goods and services from firms to households [NCERT p.14]. It involves exchange of goods and services without money.
Money Flow (Nominal Flow): The flow of factor payments (rent, wages, interest, profit) from firms to households, and the flow of consumption expenditure from households to firms [NCERT p.15]. It involves cash transactions.
Injections
In a realistic circular flow, income is leaked out and injected back in:वास्तविक circular flow में, आय का कुछ हिस्सा बाहर निकलता है और कुछ बाहर से अंदर प्रवेश करता है:
Basis (आधार)
Leakages (निकासी)
Injections (प्रवाह)
Meaning
Money withdrawn from the circular flow, reducing aggregate demand.
Money introduced into the circular flow from outside, stimulating aggregate demand.
Examples
Savings ($S$), Taxes ($T$), and Imports ($M$).
Investment ($I$), Government Spending ($G$), and Exports ($X$).
Impact on Income
Reduces the flow of income (contractionary effect).
Increases the flow of income (expansionary effect).
Section Summary:सारांश (Summary):
Income flows in a circle: Production → Income → Expenditure → back to Production.
Real Flow = goods/services; Money Flow = payments.Real Flow = goods और services का flow; Money Flow = payments का flow।
Leakages (S, T, M) reduce flow; Injections (I, G, X) increase it.Leakages (S, T, M) flow को कम करते हैं; Injections (I, G, X) इसे बढ़ाते हैं।

Checkpoint Quiz
In a 4-sector economy, if S = 200, T = 100, M = 150, I = 250, G = 120, calculate the value of Exports (X) for equilibrium.
✓ Correct! S + T + M = I + G + X → 200 + 100 + 150 = 250 + 120 + X → 450 = 370 + X → X = 80. Leakages must equal injections for macroeconomic equilibrium.✓ सही! S + T + M = I + G + X → 200 + 100 + 150 = 250 + 120 + X → 450 = 370 + X → X = 80।
✗ Incorrect! Exports do not need to equal Imports individually. The equilibrium condition is that total leakages (S + T + M) = total injections (I + G + X). Equilibrium condition यह है कि total leakages (S + T + M) = total injections (I + G + X)। सही उत्तर: X = 80।
Sub-Section Summary:
Government adds Taxes (leakage) and Government Spending (injection). Equilibrium: S + T = I + G.Government Taxes (leakage) और Government Spending (injection) जोड़ती है। Equilibrium: S + T = I + G।
Foreign sector adds Imports (leakage) and Exports (injection). Full Equilibrium: S + T + M = I + G + X.Foreign sector Imports (leakage) और Exports (injection) जोड़ता है। Full Equilibrium: S + T + M = I + G + X।
In equilibrium, Total Leakages = Total Injections always.Equilibrium में, Total Leakages = Total Injections हमेशा।

Goal:Master the Product, Expenditure, and Income methods to calculate GDP, solve the double counting problem, and know all precautions.GDP
Analogy (The Bakery Chain):Analogy (बेकरी चैन का उदाहरण):Imagine you want to know the total output of a bakery chain. You can count it 3 ways: (1) Add up what each branch produced (Product Method), (2) Add up what all customers spent on bread (Expenditure Method), (3) Add up what all workers and owners earned (Income Method). All 3 should give the same total.
1. Product / Value Added Method1. Product / Value Added Method (उत्पाद विधि)
This method avoids Double Counting by only measuring the Value Added at each stage of production [NCERT p.17]:यह method production के हर stage पर केवल Value Added को मापकर Double Counting से बचाता है [NCERT p.17]:

Wait... Unsold Goods Count as Investment? 🤔
The Unsold Shirt Analogy: A factory makes 1,000 shirts but sells only 800. The remaining 200 shirts sit in the warehouse.
Are they "wasted"? NO! Those 200 shirts are still valuable — they are the factory's inventory. The factory "invested" in making them.
Key insight: If we only counted what was SOLD, we would undercount production. The shirts WERE produced this year — so they MUST be counted. We treat the factory as if it "bought" its own unsold shirts.
This is called Inventory Investment = Closing Stock − Opening Stock [NCERT p.18].
Value of Output = Sales + Change in StockValue of Output = Sales + Change in Stock
💡 This way, GDP captures TOTAL production, not just total sales. That is why Change in Stock is part of $I$ (Investment) in the Expenditure Method formula: $GDP_{MP} = C + I + G + (X - M)$ [NCERT p.21].💡 इस तरह, GDP कुल उत्पादन को दर्शाती है, न कि केवल कुल बिक्री को। इसीलिए Change in Stock, Expenditure Method के सूत्र में $I$ (Investment) का हिस्सा है: $GDP_{MP} = C + I + G + (X - M)$ [NCERT p.21]।
3. Income Method3. Income Method (आय विधि)
This method sums the payments made to the factors of production (Wages, Rent, Interest, Profit) [NCERT p.22]:यह method production के factors को दिए जाने वाले payments (Wages, Rent, Interest, Profit) को जोड़ता है [NCERT p.22]:
$$NDP_{FC} = COE + MI$$
OS +
COE = Compensation of Employees (Wages & Salaries)COE = Compensation of Employees (कर्मचारियों का पारिश्रमिक / Wages)
MI = Mixed Income of Self-Employed [NCERT p.23]MI = Mixed Income of Self-Employed (स्व-नियोजित लोगों की मिश्रित आय) [NCERT p.23]
🌱 Why Does "Mixed Income" Exist as a Separate Category?🌱 "Mixed Income"
The Farmer Analogy: Imagine a farmer who owns 2 acres of land and works on it himself.
• He uses his own labour → should this be counted as wages?
• He uses his own land → should this be rent?
• He uses his savings for seeds and fertilizer → should this be interest on capital?
• Whatever profit remains → is this entrepreneurial profit?
Can we actually separate how much of his ₹5 lakh annual income is wages vs rent vs interest vs profit? NO, we cannot! The income is "mixed" — all four factor incomes are tangled together.
That is why we call it Mixed Income of the Self-Employed [NCERT p.23].
Mixed Income of the Self-Employed
Applies to: Farmers, doctors with private practice, lawyers, shopkeepers, chartered accountants, street vendors, and any person who is their own boss.

- Profit is divided into: (a) Corporate Tax (paid to government), (b) Dividends (distributed to shareholders), and (c) Undistributed Profits/Retained Earnings (saved for future).
- Compensation of Employees (COE) में शामिल हैं: (a) नकद वेतन, (b) वस्तुओं के रूप में वेतन (जैसे मुफ्त घर), (c) PF में नियोक्ता (Employer) का योगदान।
- Operating Surplus (OS) =

Factor income earned by foreigners in India = ₹50 lakh + ₹150 crore
NFIA = (80L + 200Cr) − (50L + 150Cr) = Net Positive
⇒ Since NFIA is positive: GNP > GDP (the country earns more from abroad than it pays out).
NFIA = (80L + 200Cr) − (50L + 150Cr) = Net Positive
When NFIA is negative (foreign factor income in India > Indian factor income abroad), then GDP > GNP. For most developing countries like India, NFIA is typically negative because more foreign companies operate in India than Indian companies abroad.

Retirement Pension (सेवा-निवृत्ति पेंशन)
INCLUDED
Deferred payment paid to workers for past productive factor services (COE).
It is a transfer payment; no factor services are rendered in return [NCERT p.26].
Profits of foreign bank branches in India
EXCLUDED
It is factor income paid to abroad (non-residents) [NCERT p.25]. (Included in Domestic Income).
Salary of Indian residents working in foreign embassies in India
INCLUDED
It is factor income earned by Indian residents from abroad (embassies are foreign territory) [NCERT p.25].
Broker's commission on sale of land or second-hand goods
INCLUDED
It represents payment for a fresh productive service rendered by the broker in the current year.
Interest paid on loan taken by a consumer
EXCLUDED
It is paid on consumption loans, which are not used for productive purposes.
Interest on public debt
EXCLUDED
Government borrowing is assumed to be for consumption purposes, hence non-productive.
📚 Why is Interest on Government Debt NOT Included in National Income?📚 सरकारी कर्ज़ पर ब्याज National Income में क्यों शामिल नहीं?
The Company vs Government Analogy:
When a company borrows ₹10 crore to buy machines, the machines help PRODUCE goods. So the interest paid on this loan is a cost of PRODUCTION → included in National Income.
But when the government borrows, it mostly uses money for consumption — paying salaries of defence personnel, running welfare schemes, administrative spending. The government does not "produce" goods for sale.
Since the borrowing was not for production, the interest paid is treated as a TRANSFER PAYMENT [NCERT p.22].
Analogy:
Interest on productive loan (business/factory) → ✔ Include in NI
Interest on consumption loan (personal loan or government debt) → ✘ Exclude from NIउत्पादक ऋण (व्यापार/कारखाना) पर ब्याज → ✔ NI में शामिल करें

EXCLUDED
It is part of factor income paid to abroad (non-resident corporate savings).
Gift/Scholarship received from abroad
EXCLUDED
These are transfer incomes, which do not add to current year output.
Free medical facilities provided to employees
INCLUDED
These are benefits in kind, which are part of Compensation of Employees (COE) [NCERT p.22].
Purchase of shares or bonds
EXCLUDED
These are financial assets (paper claims); no physical output is added to the economy.
Services of a housewife
EXCLUDED
Non-monetary service; difficult to estimate market value [NCERT p.30].
Imputed rent of owner-occupied houses
INCLUDED
Owner-occupants enjoy housing services similar to tenants renting homes.
Festival gift to employees
EXCLUDED
It is a transfer payment; not paid for productive services in the current year.
Indirect taxes paid to government (अप्रत्यक्ष कर)

5. Nominal and Real GDP5. Nominal और Real GDP
Goal:Differentiate between current price and constant price GDP and calculate the GDP Deflator.
Analogy (मूल्य परिवर्तन):If a bakery produces 100 breads in Year 1 at Rs 10 each, GDP is Rs 1,000. If in Year 2 it produces the same 100 breads but prices rise to Rs 15, Nominal GDP becomes Rs 1,500. Real GDP, however, remains Rs 1,000 because physical production did not increase.
Nominal GDP is measured at current market prices of the same year [NCERT p.27]. Real GDP is measured at base year prices (constant prices) [NCERT p.27]. Real GDP represents true economic growth because it only increases when output quantity increases.

6. GDP and Welfare6. GDP और Welfare (कल्याण)
Goal:Analyze why GDP may not be a perfect indicator of national welfare.
Analogy (The Student's Report Card):Analogy (छात्र का रिपोर्ट कार्ड):GDP is like looking ONLY at a student's total marks. A student might score 90% but be stressed, unhealthy, and unhappy. Similarly, a country might have high GDP but poor distribution of wealth, high pollution, and informal work that is not counted.GDP
Real GDP is often equated with the well-being of a country, but there are four major limitations of using GDP as a welfare index [NCERT p.29]:Real GDP को अक्सर देश के कल्याण (well-being) से जोड़कर देखा जाता है, लेकिन GDP को welfare index मानने की चार मुख्य सीमाएं हैं [NCERT p.29]:
Distribution of GDP: If the increase in GDP goes only to the rich, the welfare of the poor may actually decrease [NCERT p.29].Distribution of GDP:
Non-Monetary Exchanges: In developing countries like India, many transactions are informal or barter-based (e.g. household services by homemakers). Since they are not recorded, GDP underestimates welfare [NCERT p.30].Non-Monetary Exchanges:
Externalities: Benefits or harms caused by economic production for which no payment is made [NCERT p.30]. For example, pollution from a factory (negative externality) decreases welfare but is not deducted from GDP [NCERT p.30].Externalities:
🎯 More Real-World Examples of Externalities:🎯 Externalities
✔ Positive Externality (Vaccination / Herd Immunity): When people get vaccinated, not just they are protected — everyone around them is safer too (herd immunity). But this benefit to society does not show up in GDP. GDP only records the cost of the vaccine, not the lives saved or diseases prevented.✔ Positive Externality
✘ Negative Externality (Shopping Mall Traffic): A new shopping mall causes traffic congestion, increasing commute time and fuel costs for everyone in the area. These costs are real but do not reduce GDP — in fact, the extra fuel consumption might actually INCREASE GDP! This shows why GDP can be a misleading welfare indicator [NCERT p.30].✘ Negative Externality (Shopping Mall और Traffic): एक नया shopping mall traffic jam पैदा करता है, जिससे हर किसी का आने-जाने का समय और fuel खर्च बढ़ जाता है।
Composition of GDP: An increase in GDP due to the production of weapons does not directly improve the standard of living of consumers.
(Summary):
GDP is not a perfect welfare indicator.GDP social welfare का एक perfect indicator नहीं है।
Limitations: unequal distribution, non-monetary exchanges, externalities, composition of output.Limitations: unequal distribution, non-monetary exchanges, externalities, व composition of output।
A country can have high GDP but low welfare if gains are concentrated.

If a country's Real GDP increases by 10%, but the entire increase goes to the top 5% richest households, can we say social welfare has improved?
✗ Incorrect! GDP is an aggregate measure and does not account for income distribution.✗ गलत!
✓ Correct! Distribution of GDP is a key limitation. If gains are concentrated, the welfare of the general population may not rise.✓ सही!
6A. Green GNP — Adjusting for Environmental Damage6A. Green GNP —
Analogy (The Cheating Student):Analogy (नकल करने वाला छात्र):Imagine a student who scores 95% by cheating. The marks look great, but they do not reflect true learning. Similarly, if a country achieves high GDP by destroying forests and polluting rivers, the GDP number looks great but hides the real damage.
Green GNP (or Green National Income) adjusts the traditional GNP/NNP by subtracting the cost of environmental damage and depletion of natural resources.
$$\text{Green NNP} = \text{NNP} - \text{Depreciation of Natural Capital}$$
Where Depreciation of Natural Capital = Cost of environmental degradation + Depletion of natural resourcesजहाँ Depreciation of Natural Capital = पर्यावरणीय क्षति की लागत + प्राकृतिक संसाधनों का ह्रास
Example 1: Chemical Factoryउदाहरण 1: Chemical Factory
A chemical factory produces goods worth ₹100 crore (adds to GDP) but dumps waste in a river, causing ₹20 crore of damage to fisheries and drinking water.
Example 2: Deforestation for Farming
Clearing 1,000 hectares of forest for farming increases agricultural GDP by ₹50 crore but destroys natural capital worth ₹80 crore. Net effect on Green GDP: ₹50 − ₹80 = −₹30 crore (society is WORSE off!)
Why it matters: GDP does not tell us if growth is sustainable. Green accounting helps measure sustainable development by accounting for environmental costs that traditional GDP ignores.

If NNP = ₹500 crore, environmental damage = ₹80 crore, and natural resource depletion = ₹30 crore, what is Green NNP?
✓ Correct! Green NNP = NNP − Environmental damage − Natural resource depletion = 500 − 80 − 30 = ₹390 crore. Both environmental degradation AND resource depletion must be subtracted.✓ सही! Green NNP = NNP − Environmental damage − Natural resource depletion = 500 − 80 − 30 = ₹390 करोड़।
✗ Incorrect! You forgot to subtract natural resource depletion (₹30 crore). Green NNP = 500 − 80 − 30 = ₹390 crore, not ₹420 crore.✗ गलत!

Solved Numerical Problems (10 Questions)
Problem 1: Value Added MethodProblem 1: Value Added Method (मूल्य संवर्धित विधि) From the following data, calculate Gross Value Added at Market Price ($GVA_{MP}$) and National Income ($NNP_{FC}$): 1. Sales = ₹2,000 crores 2. Purchase of Raw Materials = ₹800 crores 3. Depreciation = ₹100 crores 4. GST (Indirect Tax) = ₹150 crores 5. Subsidies = ₹50 crores 6. Closing Stock = ₹200 crores 7. Opening Stock = ₹100 crores 8. Net Factor Income from Abroad (NFIA) = ₹-20 croresनिम्नलिखित आंकड़ों से $GVA_{MP}$ और National Income ($NNP_{FC}$) निकालें: 1. Sales = ₹2,000 crores 2. Purchase of Raw Materials = ₹800 crores 3. Depreciation = ₹100 crores 4. GST (Indirect Tax) = ₹150 crores 5. Subsidies = ₹50 crores 6. Closing Stock = ₹200 crores 7. Opening Stock = ₹100 crores 8. Net Factor Income from Abroad (NFIA) = ₹-20 crores
Calculate Change in Stock:स्टॉक में परिवर्तन (Change in Stock):
$$\text{Change in Stock} = \text{Closing Stock} - \text{Opening Stock} = 200 - 100 = ₹100 \text{ crores}$$
Calculate Value of Output:उत्पादन का मूल्य (Value of Output):
$$\text{Value of Output} = \text{Sales} + \text{Change in Stock} = 2000 + 100 = ₹2,100 \text{ crores}$$
Calculate Gross Value Added at Market Price ($GVA_{MP}$):बाज़ार कीमत पर सकल मूल्य संवर्धित ($GVA_{MP}$):
$$GVA_{MP} = \text{Value of Output} - \text{Intermediate Consumption (Purchase of Raw Materials)}$$
$$GVA_{MP} = 2100 - 800 = \mathbf{₹1,300 \text{ crores}}$$
⚠️ Common Mistake:Students often forget to add Change in Stock to Sales when calculating Value of Output.Value of Output की गणना करते समय छात्र अक्सर Sales में Change in Stock जोड़ना भूल जाते हैं।
Problem 2: Income vs Expenditure Method ReconciliationProblem 2: Income और Expenditure Method का समाधान (Reconciliation) Calculate National Income ($NNP_{FC}$) using (a) Income Method and (b) Expenditure Method: 1. Compensation of Employees = ₹800 2. PFCE ($C$) = ₹1,200 3. Rent = ₹200 | Interest = ₹150 | Profit = ₹250 4. GFCE ($G$) = ₹400 5. Gross Domestic Capital Formation ($I$) = ₹300 6. Net Exports = ₹-50 7. Mixed Income = ₹100 8. NIT = ₹120 | Depreciation = ₹80 | NFIA = ₹50निम्नलिखित आंकड़ों से (a) Income Method और (b) Expenditure Method का उपयोग करके National Income ($NNP_{FC}$) निकालें: 1. Compensation of Employees = ₹800 2. PFCE ($C$) = ₹1,200 3. Rent = ₹200 | Interest = ₹150 | Profit = ₹250 4. GFCE ($G$) = ₹400 5. Gross Domestic Capital Formation ($I$) = ₹300 6. Net Exports = ₹-50 7. Mixed Income = ₹100 8. NIT = ₹120 | Depreciation = ₹80 | NFIA = ₹50
⚠️ Common Mistake:A very common mistake is using Gross Investment directly, forgetting that the Income Method gives NDP_FC (Net), not Gross.
Problem 3: Real vs. Nominal GDP and Price IndexProblem 3: Real बनाम Nominal GDP और Price Index If Nominal GDP of an economy is ₹6,000 crores and Real GDP is ₹5,000 crores, calculate the GDP Deflator. If next year Real GDP increases by 10% and price index shoots up to 140, what will Nominal GDP be?
Calculate New Real GDP:नया Real GDP:
$$\text{New Real GDP} = 5000 + (10\% \text{ of } 5000) = 5000 + 500 = ₹5,500 \text{ crores}$$
Calculate New Nominal GDP (since Price Index = 140):नया Nominal GDP:
$$\text{Nominal GDP} = \frac{\text{Real GDP} \times \text{Price Index}}{100} = \frac{5500 \times 140}{100} = \mathbf{₹7,700 \text{ crores}}$$
⚠️ Common Mistake:Don't confuse which year's prices to use: Real GDP always uses BASE year prices.
Problem 4: Solving for Sales (Value Added)Problem 4: Sales की गणना (Value Added Method) From the following data, calculate the value of 'Sales': 1. Net Value Added at Factor Cost ($NVA_{FC}$) = ₹560 crores 2. Intermediate Consumption = ₹600 crores 3. GST (Indirect Tax) = ₹60 crores 4. Subsidies = ₹10 crores 5. Depreciation = ₹80 crores 6. Net Value Added at Factor Cost ($NVA_{FC}$) = ₹560 crores 2. Intermediate Consumption = ₹600 crores 3. GST (Indirect Tax) = ₹60 crores 4. Subsidies = ₹10 crores 5. Depreciation = ₹80 crores 6. Change in Stock = ₹-30 crores
Convert $NVA_{FC}$ to $GVA_{MP}$ (Gross value added at MP):Gross Value Added ($GVA_{MP}$):
$$GVA_{MP} = NVA_{FC} + \text{Depreciation} + NIT$$
$$GVA_{MP} = 560 + 80 + 50 = ₹690 \text{ crores}$$
Calculate Value of Output:उत्पादन का मूल्य (Value of Output):
$$\text{Value of Output} = GVA_{MP} + \text{Intermediate Consumption} = 690 + 600 = ₹1,290 \text{ crores}$$
Calculate Sales:बिक्री (Sales):
$$\text{Sales} = \text{Value of Output} - \text{Change in Stock} = 1290 - (-30) = \mathbf{₹1,320 \text{ crores}}$$
⚠️ Common Mistake:Students commonly add Depreciation instead of subtracting it when converting from GDP_MP to NNP_FC.GDP_MP
Problem 5: Solving for COE and Operating SurplusProblem 5: COE और Operating Surplus की गणना From the following data, calculate (a) Compensation of Employees and (b) Operating Surplus: 1. National Income ($NNP_{FC}$) = ₹2,000 crores 2. Mixed Income = ₹500 crores 3. NFIA = ₹50 crores 4. Profit = ₹300 crores 5. Rent = ₹150 crores 6. Interest = ₹250 croresनिम्नलिखित आंकड़ों से (a) Compensation of Employees और (b) Operating Surplus निकालें: 1. National Income ($NNP_{FC}$) = ₹2,000 crores 2. Mixed Income = ₹500 crores 3. NFIA = ₹50 crores 4. Profit = ₹300 crores 5. Rent = ₹150 crores 6. Interest = ₹250 crores
⚠️ Common Mistake:Employee's own PF contribution is NOT added to Compensation of Employees (COE) as it is already included in wages. Only Employer's contribution is added.
Problem 6: Solving for GDCF (Expenditure Method)Problem 6: GDCF की गणना (Expenditure Method) From the following data, calculate Gross Domestic Capital Formation (GDCF): 1. National Income ($NNP_{FC}$) = ₹3,500 crores 2. PFCE ($C$) = ₹2,000 crores 3. GFCE ($G$) = ₹800 crores 4. Net Exports = ₹-100 crores 5. NFIA = ₹100 crores 6. Depreciation = ₹150 crores 7. NIT = ₹200 croresनिम्नलिखित आंकड़ों से Gross Domestic Capital Formation (GDCF) निकालें: 1. National Income ($NNP_{FC}$) = ₹3,500 crores 2. PFCE ($C$) = ₹2,000 crores 3. GFCE ($G$) = ₹800 crores 4. Net Exports = ₹-100 crores 5. NFIA = ₹100 crores 6. Depreciation = ₹150 crores 7. NIT = ₹200 crores
Use Expenditure Method Formula to solve for GDCF:GDCF
$$GDP_{MP} = C + G + \text{GDCF} + \text{Net Exports}$$
$$3750 = 2000 + 800 + \text{GDCF} + (-100)$$
$$3750 = 2700 + \text{GDCF}$$
$$\text{GDCF} = 3750 - 2700 = \mathbf{₹1,050 \text{ crores}}$$
⚠️ Common Mistake:Net Factor Income from Abroad (NFIA) can be negative! If factor income paid to abroad is greater than factor income received, NFIA is negative.Net Factor Income from Abroad (NFIA) negative
Problem 7: Real GDP from CPIProblem 7: CPI से Real GDP की गणना If Nominal GDP of a country in 2024 is ₹12,000 crores and the Consumer Price Index (base year 2015 = 100) is 150, calculate the Real GDP of the country.
Use Real GDP conversion formula:Real GDP
$$\text{Real GDP} = \frac{\text{Nominal GDP}}{\text{CPI}} \times 100$$
$$\text{Real GDP} = \frac{12000}{150} \times 100 = 80 \times 100 = \mathbf{₹8,000 \text{ crores}}$$
⚠️ Common Mistake:A GDP Deflator of 100 does not mean prices are low; it means prices are the same as the base year (no change).GDP Deflator 100 होने का मतलब यह नहीं है कि prices कम हैं; इसका मतलब है कि prices base year के समान हैं (कोई बदलाव नहीं)।
Problem 8: GVA at Basic Prices vs. GVA at Factor CostProblem 8: Basic Prices पर GVA बनाम Factor Cost पर GVA Calculate GVA at Factor Cost and GVA at Basic Prices: 1. GVA at Market Price = ₹900 crores 2. Production Taxes = ₹80 crores | Production Subsidies = ₹30 crores 3. Product Taxes = ₹120 crores | Product Subsidies = ₹40 croresनिम्नलिखित आंकड़ों से GVA at Factor Cost और GVA at Basic Prices निकालें: 1. GVA at Market Price = ₹900 crores 2. Production Taxes = ₹80 crores | Production Subsidies = ₹30 crores 3. Product Taxes = ₹120 crores | Product Subsidies = ₹40 crores
Calculate GVA at Basic Prices:Basic Prices पर GVA:
$$\text{Net Product Taxes} = \text{Product Taxes} - \text{Product Subsidies} = 120 - 40 = ₹80 \text{ crores}$$
$$\text{GVA at Basic Prices} = \text{GVA at Market Price} - \text{Net Product Taxes}$$
$$\text{GVA at Basic Prices} = 900 - 80 = \mathbf{₹820 \text{ crores}}$$
Calculate GVA at Factor Cost:Factor Cost पर GVA:
$$\text{Net Production Taxes} = \text{Production Taxes} - \text{Production Subsidies} = 80 - 30 = ₹50 \text{ crores}$$
$$\text{GVA at Factor Cost} = \text{GVA at Basic Prices} - \text{Net Production Taxes}$$
$$\text{GVA at Factor Cost} = 820 - 50 = \mathbf{₹770 \text{ crores}}$$
⚠️ Common Mistake:Net Indirect Taxes (NIT) equals Indirect Taxes minus Subsidies. Students often forget to subtract subsidies.
National Income ($NNP_{FC}$) = ₹1,800 crores 2. Corporate Tax = ₹80 crores | Undistributed Profits = ₹40 crores 3. Net interest paid by households = ₹30 crores 4. Transfer payments received = ₹120 crores 5. Personal Direct Taxes = ₹100 crores | Non-tax payments = ₹20 croresनिम्नलिखित आंकड़ों से Personal Disposable Income (PDI) निकालें: 1. National Income ($NNP_{FC}$) = ₹1,800 crores 2. Corporate Tax = ₹80 crores | Undistributed Profits = ₹40 crores 3. Net interest paid by households = ₹30 crores 4. Transfer payments received = ₹120 crores 5. Personal Direct Taxes = ₹100 crores | Non-tax payments = ₹20 crores
Calculate Personal Income ($PI$):व्यक्तिगत आय ($PI$):
$$PI = NI - \text{Corporate Tax} - \text{Undistributed Profits} - \text{Net Interest by households} + \text{Transfer payments}$$
$$PI = 1800 - 80 - 40 - 30 + 120 = \mathbf{₹1,770 \text{ crores}}$$
Calculate Personal Disposable Income ($PDI$):व्यक्तिगत प्रयोज्य आय ($PDI$):
$$PDI = PI - \text{Personal Direct Taxes} - \text{Non-tax payments}$$
$$PDI = 1770 - 100 - 20 = \mathbf{₹1,650 \text{ crores}}$$
⚠️ Common Mistake:Old-age pension is a transfer payment (excluded), but Retirement pension to ex-employees is factor income (included).Old-age pension
Problem 10: Mixed Income and Aggregate ConversionsProblem 10: Mixed Income और Aggregate Conversions की गणना Find GDP at MP and NDP at FC using Income and Expenditure methods: 1. COE = ₹1,500 | Mixed Income = ₹600 | Operating Surplus = ₹900 2. PFCE = ₹2,100 | GFCE = ₹600 | GFCF = ₹400 | Change in Stock = ₹100 3. Exports = ₹150 | Imports = ₹250 4. Depreciation = ₹120 | NIT = ₹180निम्नलिखित आंकड़ों से Income और Expenditure methods से GDP at MP और NDP at FC निकालें: 1. COE = ₹1,500 | Mixed Income = ₹600 | Operating Surplus = ₹900 2. PFCE = ₹2,100 | GFCE = ₹600 | GFCF = ₹400 | Change in Stock = ₹100 3. Exports = ₹150 | Imports = ₹250 4. Depreciation = ₹120 | NIT = ₹180
⚠️ Common Mistake:Production Taxes and Product Taxes are different! Production taxes are independent of output (e.g., land revenue), whereas Product taxes depend on units sold (e.g., GST).Production Taxes और Product Taxes अलग-अलग हैं!
Q1. State whether the following transactions are included in the estimation of National Income of India. Give reasons:
(i) Profits earned by a branch of a foreign bank in India.
(ii) Old-age pension received by a senior citizen.
(iii) Commission paid to a broker on purchase of a second-hand house.
CBSE 2024
Answer: (i) Excluded from National Income: Profits earned by a branch of a foreign bank in India represent factor income paid to abroad (non-residents) [NCERT p.25]. (Note: It is included in Domestic Income of India).
(ii) Excluded from National Income: Old-age pension is a transfer payment, as it is unearned income and no factor service is rendered in return.
(iii) Included in National Income: Commission paid to a broker represents payment for a productive service rendered in the current year.
Q2. Define the term 'Externalities'. Distinguish between positive and negative externalities with examples.CBSE 2023
Answer: Externalities refer to the benefits or harms caused by economic activities of firms or individuals to others, for which they are not paid or penalized [NCERT p.30].
- Positive Externality: A benefit enjoyed by others without payment. Example: A house owner plants a beautiful garden, which increases the aesthetic value of the street and well-being of neighbors.
- Negative Externality: A harm or cost suffered by others without compensation. Example: A chemical factory pollutes a nearby river, harming aquatic life and the health of local residents [NCERT p.30].
- Positive Externality:
Q3. Explain the concept of double counting with a suitable example. How can it be avoided?CBSE 2023
Answer: - Double Counting: The error of counting the value of the same good more than once during national income calculation [NCERT p.17].
- Example: A farmer sells wheat to a miller for Rs 100. The miller grinds it into flour and sells it to a baker for Rs 150. The baker bakes bread and sells it to consumers for Rs 220. If we add the outputs ($100 + 150 + 220 = 470$), we count the wheat value three times.
- How to avoid:
1. Final Product Method: Include only the final bread value (Rs 220) [NCERT p.17].
2. Value Added Method: Sum the values added at each stage ($100 + 50 + 70 = \text{Rs } 220$) [NCERT p.17].
Q4. Distinguish between intermediate goods and final goods. Why are intermediate goods excluded from national income?CBSE 2022
Answer: Final goods are meant for final consumption or investment [NCERT p.10]. Intermediate goods are used as raw materials or for resale in the same year [NCERT p.10].
Intermediate goods are excluded to avoid the error of double counting [NCERT p.17]. The value of intermediate goods is already included in the value of final goods. If we count them again, the same value will be added twice.
Q5. Explain how Real GDP is a better indicator of economic growth than Nominal GDP.CBSE 2022
Answer: Nominal GDP is calculated using current year prices, while Real GDP is calculated using constant base year prices [NCERT p.27].
Nominal GDP can increase even if physical output declines, simply due to price inflation. Real GDP only increases if there is an actual increase in physical production [NCERT p.27]. Hence, Real GDP is a superior indicator of actual economic growth.
Q6. Define Compensation of Employees, Operating Surplus, and Mixed Income, and write their aggregate domestic income equation.CBSE 2021
Answer: 1. Compensation of Employees (COE): Total payments in cash or kind made to employees for labour services [NCERT p.22].
2. Operating Surplus (OS): Income earned from property and entrepreneurship (Rent + Royalty + Interest + Profit) [NCERT p.26].
3. Mixed Income (MI): Combined income of self-employed professionals using their own labour, land, and capital [NCERT p.23].
Domestic Income Equation: $NDP_{FC} = COE + OS + MI$ [NCERT p.22]. Compensation of Employees (COE):
Q7. State whether the following are included in the estimation of National Income of India. Give reasons:
(i) Salaries of Indian residents working in the Russian Embassy in India.
(ii) Interest paid by households on a car loan.
(iii) Festival gift given to employees by an employer.
CBSE 2021
Answer: (i) Included in National Income: Salaries of Indian residents working in the Russian Embassy in India represent factor income earned by residents from abroad [NCERT p.25].
(ii) Excluded from National Income: Interest paid on a car loan by households is on a consumption loan, which is not used for productive purposes.
(iii) Excluded from National Income: Festival gifts are transfer payments (unearned), not factor payments.
Q8. Describe the circular flow of income in a two-sector economy.CBSE 2020
Answer: In a simple two-sector economy (Households and Firms) [NCERT p.14]:
1. Households provide factor services (Labour, Land, Capital) to firms. Firms use these factors to produce goods and services (Real Flow).
2. Firms pay factor incomes (Wages, Rent, Profit) to households. Households spend this income on purchasing goods and services from firms (Money Flow).
3. Thus, production creates income, income generates expenditure, and expenditure generates production again, creating a continuous loop.
Q9. Explain the treatment of the following in estimation of National Income:
(i) Rent-free accommodation provided to employees by the employer.
(ii) Expenditure on purchase of shares of a company.
(iii) Subsidies provided by government on LPG cylinders.
CBSE 2020
Answer: (i) Included in National Income: Rent-free accommodation is part of Compensation of Employees in kind [NCERT p.22].
(ii) Excluded from National Income: Expenditure on shares is a financial asset transaction (mere paper claims), not adding to physical production.
(iii) Excluded from National Income: Subsidies are transfer payments by the government, not factor payments.
उत्तर: (i) राष्ट्रीय आय में शामिल होगा: नियोक्ता द्वारा दिया गया मुफ्त आवास 'Compensation of Employees in kind' (वस्तु के रूप में वेतन) का हिस्सा है [NCERT p.22]।
Q10. State the difference between GVA at basic prices and GVA at factor cost.CBSE 2024
Answer: GVA at Factor Cost measures the value of output based solely on factor payments [NCERT p.24].
GVA at Basic Prices includes factor cost and net production taxes (production taxes minus production subsidies) [NCERT p.24].
$$\text{GVA at Basic Prices} = \text{GVA at Factor Cost} + \text{Production Taxes} - \text{Production Subsidies}$$
GVA at Basic Prices
$$\text{GVA at Basic Prices} = \text{GVA at Factor Cost} + \text{Production Taxes} - \text{Production Subsidies}$$
Solved NCERT Exercises
Exercise 1
What are the three alternative ways of looking at GDP? [NCERT p.31]
The three alternative methods are [NCERT p.15]:
1. Value Added / Product Method: Sums the Gross Value Added ($GVA$) by all producing enterprises within the territory [NCERT p.16].
2. Expenditure Method: Sums all final spending: $GDP = C + I + G + (X - M)$ [NCERT p.22].
3. Income Method: Sums factor payments: $NDP_{FC} = COE + OS + MI$ [NCERT p.22].
All three methods give identical results because production creates income, which is spent on goods.
2. Expenditure Method: अंतिम खर्चों का जोड़: $GDP = C + I + G + (X - M)$ [NCERT p.22]।
3. Income Method: Factors of production
Exercise 2
Distinguish between stock and flow. Classify wealth, investment, capital, and income.
Stock variables are measured at a specific point in time [NCERT p.18]. Flow variables are measured over a period of time [NCERT p.18].
- Stock: Wealth, Capital.
- Flow: Income, Investment.
Stock variables को एक specific point in time पर मापा जाता है [NCERT p.18]। Flow variables को एक period of time के दौरान मापा जाता है [NCERT p.18]।
- Stock: Wealth (धन), Capital (पूंजी)।
- Flow: Income (आय), Investment (निवेश)।
Exercise 3
Plan a tabular distinction between final goods and intermediate goods.
Final goods are purchased for consumption or investment [NCERT p.10]. Intermediate goods are used as raw materials or resold [NCERT p.10].
Final Goods
Intermediate Goods
Used for final consumption/investment.
Used for further production/resale.
Outside the production boundary.
Inside the production boundary.
Final Goods (अंतिम वस्तुएं)
Intermediate Goods (मध्यवर्ती)
Exercise 4
What is the difference between planned and unplanned inventory accumulation? Write the relation between change in inventory and value added.
- Planned Inventory Accumulation is the intentional change in stock to meet future demand [NCERT p.19].
- Unplanned Inventory Accumulation occurs when sales fall unexpectedly, leaving the firm with unsold stocks [NCERT p.19].
- Relation: $\text{Value Added} = \text{Sales} + \text{Change in Inventory} - \text{Intermediate Consumption}$ [NCERT p.18].
- संबंध: $\text{Value Added} = \text{Sales} + \text{Change in Inventory} - \text{Intermediate Consumption}$ [NCERT p.18]।
Exercise 5
Write down the three identities of calculating GDP.
1. $GVA = \text{Value of Output} - \text{Intermediate Consumption}$ [NCERT p.17].
2. $GDP_{MP} = C + I + G + (X - M)$ [NCERT p.22].
3. $NDP_{FC} = COE + OS + MI$ [NCERT p.22].
1. $GVA = \text{Value of Output} - \text{Intermediate Consumption}$ [NCERT p.17]।
2. $GDP_{MP} = C + I + G + (X - M)$ [NCERT p.22]।
3. $NDP_{FC} = COE + OS + MI$ [NCERT p.22]।
Exercise 6
Suppose the GDP at market price of a country in a particular year was Rs 1,100 crores. Net Factor Income from Abroad was Rs 100 crores. Net Indirect Taxes was Rs 150 crores and National Income was Rs 850 crores. Calculate the value of depreciation.
In a single day Raju, the barber, collects Rs 500 from haircuts; over this day, his equipment depreciates by Rs 50. Of the remaining Rs 450, Raju pays sales tax of Rs 30, takes home Rs 200 and retains Rs 220 for improvement and buying of new equipment. What is Raju’s contribution to the following measures of GDP? (a) GDP, (b) NNP, (c) National Income, (d) Personal Income, (e) Personal Disposable Income (if he pays Rs 20 as income tax).
(a) GDP (Value of output): Rs 500.
(b) NNP (GDP - Depreciation): $500 - 50 = \text{Rs } 450$.
(c) National Income ($NNP_{FC}$): $NNP_{MP} - NIT = 450 - 30 = \text{Rs } 420$.
(d) Personal Income: Income Raju actually receives/takes home $= \text{Rs } 200$ (since the retained Rs 220 is undistributed corporate savings).
(e) Personal Disposable Income: $PI - \text{Personal Tax} = 200 - 20 = \text{Rs } 180$.
(a) GDP: ₹500.
(b) NNP: $500 - 50 = ₹450$.
(c) National Income ($NNP_{FC}$): $450 - 30 = ₹420$.
(e) Personal Disposable Income: $PI - \text{Income Tax} = 200 - 20 = ₹180$।
Exercise 8
The value of the nominal GNP of an economy was Rs 2,500 crores in a particular year. The value of GNP of that country during the same year, evaluated at the prices of a base year, was Rs 3,000 crores. Calculate the value of the GNP deflator. Was there an increase in price level?
Given: Nominal GNP = Rs 2,500 crores, Real GNP = Rs 3,000 crores.
$$\text{GNP Deflator} = \frac{\text{Nominal GNP}}{\text{Real GNP}} \times 100 = \frac{2500}{3000} \times 100 = 83.33\%$$
Since the deflator is $83.33\%$ (which is less than $100\%$), it indicates that the price level actually decreased (deflation) compared to the base year.
$$\text{GNP Deflator} = \frac{\text{Nominal GNP}}{\text{Real GNP}} \times 100 = \frac{2500}{3000} \times 100 = 83.33\%$$
Exercise 9
Write down some of the limitations of using GDP as an index of welfare of a country. [NCERT p.31]
The limitations are [NCERT p.29]:
1. Inequality of Income: GDP does not show how income is distributed; a high GDP could exist alongside extreme poverty [NCERT p.29].
2. Non-monetary transactions: Barter trade and household services are ignored, underestimating actual welfare [NCERT p.30].
3. Externalities: Negative externalities (pollution) and positive externalities are not counted in GDP, misrepresenting well-being [NCERT p.30].
GDP की सीमाएं [NCERT p.29]:
1. Inequality of Income: GDP
