How Forces Affect Motion

Why does a pushed box stop? Why do you jerk when a bus brakes? Why does a rocket rise? Newton's three laws answer all of it — and this chapter shows them in pictures first.

In Chapter 4 you learnt to describe motion (position, velocity, acceleration). Here we ask the deeper question: what causes motion to change? The answer is force — and Newton's three laws tie force, mass and acceleration together.

Remember from before:पहले जो सीखा था:

1. The Concept of Force [NCERT p.94-95]

Goal: Say what a force does, how it is measured, and why direction always matters.

A force is a push or a pull. It can start motion, stop motion, change speed or direction, or change shape. Look at the three everyday actions below — each is a force doing one of these jobs.[NCERT p.94] एक force push या pull है। [NCERT p.94]

Force always has a directionForce

Whenever we name a force, we also name its direction — friction acts opposite to motion, gravity pulls down, buoyancy pushes up. So force is a quantity that needs both a magnitude (how strong) and a direction — just like velocity and acceleration.[NCERT p.95] जब भी हम किसी force का नाम लेते हैं, उसकी direction भी बताते हैं — friction motion के opposite लगता है, gravity नीचे खींचती है, buoyancy ऊपर धकेलती है। [NCERT p.95]

Measuring a force — the spring balanceForce नापना — spring balance

A spring balance measures force: pull its hook and the spring stretches by an amount that shows the force on a scale. Its SI unit is the newton (N) — written with a small 'n', symbol capital 'N'. The weight of an object (the Earth's gravitational pull on it) is just one force a spring balance can read.[NCERT p.95] एक spring balance force नापता है: इसके hook को खींचिए और spring उतना खिंचता है जितनी force scale पर दिखती है।

The smallest force we can feel (a light touch) is about a millinewton (10⁻³ N). In special experiments, scientists have measured forces as tiny as a yoctonewton (10⁻²⁴ N) — a trillion-trillion times smaller.[NCERT p.95] जो सबसे छोटी force हम महसूस कर सकते हैं (हल्का स्पर्श) वह लगभग एक millinewton (10⁻³ N) है। [NCERT p.95]

2. Balanced and Unbalanced Forces [NCERT p.95-96]

Goal: Find the net force and decide whether motion changes.

In real life more than one force usually acts on an object. When you push a box, friction also acts on it. When a ball floats, gravity pulls it down while buoyancy pushes it up. What matters for its motion is the single net force — the combined effect.[NCERT p.95] असल ज़िंदगी में किसी object पर आमतौर पर एक से ज़्यादा force लगते हैं। [NCERT p.95]

Everyday picture — tug of warरोज़ का उदाहरण — रस्साकशी If both teams pull equally, the rope does not move — forces are balanced (net = 0). If one pulls harder, the rope moves toward it — forces are unbalanced (net ≠ 0).
equal & opposite net = 0 → no motion change BalancedBalanced (संतुलित)
unequal net ≠ 0 → motion changes UnbalancedUnbalanced (असंतुलित)

Rule of thumb: forces in the same direction add; forces in opposite directions subtract, and the net acts along the larger one.[NCERT p.96] अंगूठे का नियम: एक ही direction की forces जुड़ती हैं; opposite direction की forces घटती हैं, और net बड़ी वाली की direction में लगता है।[NCERT p.96]

Next level up:अगला स्तर: Forces need not be parallel — they can act at an angle (you'll add these in higher grades). And equal-opposite forces applied at the two ends of an object (like turning a tap or a handlebar) make it rotate instead of move.[NCERT p.96] forces [NCERT p.96]

3. The Force of Friction [NCERT p.97-99]

Goal: Explain why moving objects stop, what friction depends on, and imagine a world without it.Goal:

Push a heavy box and it may not move at all — because friction acts backward, opposite to your push. The box moves only when your push is larger than friction, giving a net force forward. Stop pushing, and friction alone quietly brings the box to rest.[NCERT p.97] किसी भारी box को धकेलिए और शायद वह हिले ही नहीं — क्योंकि friction पीछे की ओर, आपके धक्के के opposite लगता है। [NCERT p.97]

Tape four ₹10 coins into a stack, stretch a rubber band behind it to a fixed mark, and release. The stack slides, slows and stops. Repeat on different surfaces — the smoother the surface, the farther the stack travels, because friction is smaller.[NCERT p.98] चार ₹10 के सिक्कों को tape से जोड़कर एक stack बनाइए, उसके पीछे rubber band को एक तय निशान तक खींचिए, और छोड़िए। [NCERT p.98]

Think like a scientist — a thought experiment:वैज्ञानिक की तरह सोचिए — एक thought experiment: Imagine a surface so smooth that friction is zero. Release the stack — its velocity would never decrease. It would keep moving forever! This imagined case is exactly what leads us to Newton's first law.[NCERT p.99] ऐसी surface की कल्पना कीजिए जो इतनी चिकनी हो कि friction zero हो। [NCERT p.99]
What if friction vanished? You could not walk (feet would slip), pencils would not write, nails would slide out, and nothing you set down would stay put. Friction is often overlooked — but it is always present, and mostly helpful.

4. Newton's First Law — Inertia [NCERT p.100-101]

Goal: State the first law and use it to explain everyday jerks.
Newton's First LawNewton का पहला Law An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion keeps moving with constant velocity — unless a net force acts on it. rest

In short: if net force is zero, acceleration is zero. A resting object cannot start on its own; a moving object cannot change its velocity on its own. This "unwillingness to change" is called inertia.[NCERT p.100] संक्षेप में: net force zero तो acceleration zero। [NCERT p.100]

Everyday picture — the bus jerkरोज़ का उदाहरण — bus का झटका When a bus suddenly starts, you fall backward (your body wanted to stay at rest). When it brakes, you lurch forward (your body wanted to keep moving). That is inertia in action.
bus suddenly STARTS → falls back bus BRAKES ✋ lurches forward

5. Newton's Second Law — F = ma [NCERT p.102-105]

Goal: Relate force, mass and acceleration; use F = ma and F = mg.Goal: force, mass
Law A net force makes an object accelerate in its own direction. The acceleration is bigger for a bigger force and smaller for a bigger mass. net force

Two experiments (the cart-and-pulley activities) support this: for the same cart, a bigger pulling force gave a bigger acceleration; for the same force, a heavier cart gave a smaller acceleration.

What one newton meansएक newton का मतलब

Put m = 1 kg and a = 1 m s⁻² into F = ma: F = 1 N. So one newton is the force that gives a 1 kg mass an acceleration of 1 m s⁻², i.e., 1 N = 1 kg·m s⁻². (Holding a 100 g mass in your palm feels like about 1 N.)[NCERT p.104] F = ma में m = 1 kg और a = 1 m s⁻² रखिए: F = 1 N। [NCERT p.104]

Weight is a force:Weight एक force है: An object falling freely accelerates at g = 9.8 m s⁻² (≈ 10 for quick estimates). So the Earth's pull — the object's weight — is F = mg. Note g does not depend on the object's mass.[NCERT p.104] स्वतंत्र रूप से गिरती वस्तु g = 9.8 m s⁻² (जल्दी अनुमान के लिए ≈ 10) से accelerate होती है। [NCERT p.104]

Newton's Third LawNewton का तीसरा Law When object A exerts a force on object B, object B at the same time exerts an equal and opposite force on A. Forces come in pairs — on two different objects. जब वस्तु A वस्तु B पर force लगाती है, वस्तु B उसी समय A पर बराबर व opposite force लगाती है।

Because the two forces act on different objects, they do not cancel out. (Only when equal-opposite forces act on the same object do they balance.) Two connected spring balances pulled apart always show the same reading — proof that the pair is equal.[NCERT p.108] चूँकि दोनों forces अलग वस्तुओं पर लगती हैं, वे cancel नहीं होतीं। [NCERT p.108]

Goal: Treat connected objects as one system and find its acceleration.

Two boxes (m₁, m₂) on a frictionless floor are joined by a string. Pull the front box with force F. The string's tension is an internal force — it acts inside the system, so it cancels within. Only the external force F matters. So the whole system behaves like one object of mass (m₁ + m₂):[NCERT p.111] घर्षणरहित फ़र्श पर दो boxes (m₁, m₂) एक रस्सी से जुड़े हैं।

(Revise, Reflect, Refine)

Q1. A table is moved at constant velocity by a horizontal force F. How much is the friction from the floor?
Constant velocity ⇒ net force zero ⇒ friction is equal and opposite to F, i.e., friction = F.[NCERT p.112] Constant velocity ⇒ net force zero ⇒ friction, F
Q2. A ball on a smooth surface: (i) no net force, (ii) net force along motion, (iii) net force opposite motion — what happens to its speed?चिकनी सतह पर एक ball: (i) कोई net force नहीं, (ii) motion की ओर net force, (iii) motion के opposite net force — speed का क्या होगा?
(i) remains the same; (ii) increases; (iii) decreases.[NCERT p.112] (i) [NCERT p.112]
Q3. Block P has 4 N and 5 N in opposite directions; block Q moves at constant velocity. Which experiences a net force?
On P, net = 5 − 4 = 1 N (non-zero). Q at constant velocity has net zero. So (i) P experiences a net force and Q does not.[NCERT p.112] P पर net = 5 − 4 = 1 N (non-zero)। Q constant velocity पर, net zero। इसलिए (i) P पर net force है, Q पर नहीं[NCERT p.112]
Q4. Snake-boat race: 95 oarsmen row backward, 5 by mistake row forward, each 200 N. Net force on the boat?
Forward-driving = 95 × 200 = 19000 N; opposing = 5 × 200 = 1000 N. Net = 19000 − 1000 = 18000 N in the boat's forward direction.[NCERT p.113] आगे बढ़ाने वाली = 95 × 200 = 19000 N; विरोधी = 5 × 200 = 1000 N। [NCERT p.113]
Q5. When a net force acts, the object accelerates…?
(iv) in the direction of the force, with acceleration proportional to the force.[NCERT p.113] (iv) force [NCERT p.113]
Q6. Position–time graphs for A, B, C, D. On which object does a net force act?A, B, C, D के position–time graphs।
A net force means acceleration, i.e., a curved position–time graph (changing slope). The straight-line graphs mean constant velocity (no net force); the curved one is the object with a net force.[NCERT p.113] Net force का मतलब acceleration, यानी वक्र (curved) position–time graph (बदलता slope)। [NCERT p.113]
Q7. A sailor jumps forward from a small boat to the shore. Does the boat move?
Yes. The sailor pushes the boat backward (action); the boat pushes the sailor forward (reaction). So the boat moves backward — Newton's third law.[NCERT p.113] हाँ। [NCERT p.113]
Q8. Why is a soft landing mat / sand bed placed for a high jumper?
The mat increases the stopping time. Longer time ⇒ smaller acceleration ⇒ smaller force on the athlete (second law) ⇒ less injury.[NCERT p.113] गद्दा रुकने का समय बढ़ाता है। [NCERT p.113]
Q9. A loaded cart collides with an identical empty cart. Which exerts the larger force?
(iv) Both carts exert equal magnitude forces on each other (third law). Their accelerations differ because their masses differ.[NCERT p.114] (iv) [NCERT p.114]
Q10. Given an acceleration–mass graph for a fixed force, sketch the force–mass graph.
F = ma is the same for every mass (the force is fixed). So on a force–mass graph the force is a horizontal straight line at the constant value of F.[NCERT p.114] F = ma हर mass के लिए एक ही है (force तय है)। इसलिए force–mass graph पर force एक क्षैतिज सीधी रेखा है, F के स्थिर मान पर।[NCERT p.114]
Q11. A 10 kg object's v–t graph rises 0→30 m/s in 4 s then... find the force from the graph.
Acceleration = slope = (30 − 0)/4 = 7.5 m s⁻². Force = ma = 10 × 7.5 = 75 N. (Where the graph is flat, a = 0 and F = 0.)[NCERT p.114] Acceleration = slope = (30 − 0)/4 = 7.5 m s⁻²। Force = ma = 10 × 7.5 = 75 N। (जहाँ graph सपाट है, a = 0 और F = 0।)[NCERT p.114]
Q12. A 50 g bullet at 100 m/s stops after penetrating 50 cm into a block. Find the stopping force.50 g
m = 0.05 kg, u = 100, v = 0, s = 0.5 m. From v² = u² + 2as: 0 = 100² + 2a(0.5) ⇒ a = −10000 m s⁻². Force = ma = 0.05 × (−10000) = −500 N (magnitude 500 N, opposing motion).[NCERT p.114] m = 0.05 kg, u = 100, v = 0, s = 0.5 m। v² = u² + 2as से: 0 = 100² + 2a(0.5) ⇒ a = −10000 m s⁻²। Force = ma = 0.05 × (−10000) = −500 N (परिमाण 500 N, motion के विरुद्ध)।[NCERT p.114]
Q13. A 0.4 kg football is kicked to 108 km/h with a force of 800 N. Find the contact time.
v = 108 km/h = 30 m/s. a = F/m = 800/0.4 = 2000 m s⁻². From v = u + at: 30 = 0 + 2000t ⇒ t = 30/2000 = 0.015 s.[NCERT p.114] v = 108 km/h = 30 m/s। a = F/m = 800/0.4 = 2000 m s⁻²। v = u + at से: 30 = 0 + 2000t ⇒ t = 30/2000 = 0.015 s[NCERT p.114]
Q14. A 2 kg object at 10 m/s enters a rough patch: friction 7 N plus an extra 3 N opposing. How far before it stops?
Total opposing force = 7 + 3 = 10 N. a = F/m = 10/2 = 5 m s⁻² (deceleration). Using v² = u² − 2as: 0 = 10² − 2(5)s ⇒ s = 100/10 = 10 m.[NCERT p.114] कुल विरोधी force = 7 + 3 = 10 N। a = F/m = 10/2 = 5 m s⁻² (मंदन)। v² = u² − 2as से: 0 = 10² − 2(5)s ⇒ s = 100/10 = 10 m[NCERT p.114]
Q15 (Journey Beyond). A tractor pulls a harrow (mass m₁) with force F → acceleration a₁, and a trolley (m₂) with the same F → a₂. With both together, find the acceleration in terms of a₁, a₂.एक tractor एक harrow (mass m₁) को force F से खींचे → acceleration a₁, और एक trolley (m₂) को उसी F से → a₂।
F = m₁a₁ and F = m₂a₂, so m₁ = F/a₁, m₂ = F/a₂. Together: a = F/(m₁ + m₂) = F ÷ (F/a₁ + F/a₂) = a₁a₂ / (a₁ + a₂).[NCERT p.114] F = m₁a₁ और F = m₂a₂, इसलिए m₁ = F/a₁, m₂ = F/a₂। साथ में: a = F/(m₁ + m₂) = F ÷ (F/a₁ + F/a₂) = a₁a₂ / (a₁ + a₂)[NCERT p.114]
Q16. A bar magnet's pole is brought near a compass needle (also a magnet). What can you say about the forces they exert?
By Newton's third law the magnet and needle exert equal and opposite magnetic forces on each other — the law applies to non-contact forces too.[NCERT p.114] Newton [NCERT p.114]

Previous-Year Style Questions (PYQ)पिछले सालों जैसे सवाल (PYQ)

PYQ 1. A force of 20 N acts on a 4 kg object. Find its acceleration. (2 marks)
a = F/m = 20/4 = 5 m s⁻² in the direction of the force. a = F/m = 20/4 = 5 m s⁻², force की direction में।
PYQ 2. Why do passengers fall forward when a moving bus stops suddenly? (2 marks)
Due to inertia of motion: the body tends to keep moving forward even after the bus stops (Newton's first law).
PYQ 3. Define one newton. (1 mark)
One newton is the force that gives a mass of 1 kg an acceleration of 1 m s⁻². So 1 N = 1 kg·m s⁻².
PYQ 4. A 5 kg gun fires a 0.1 kg bullet with a force of 2 N. Find the accelerations of the gun and the bullet. (3 marks)
By the third law both feel 2 N. Gun: a = 2/5 = 0.4 m s⁻²; bullet: a = 2/0.1 = 20 m s⁻². Equal forces, unequal accelerations (different masses). बंदूक: a = 2/5 = 0.4 m s⁻²; गोली: a = 2/0.1 = 20 m s⁻²। (Example 6.8)

The Journey Beyond — friction, ropes and the wheelआगे की यात्रा — friction, रस्सी और पहिया

Friction is everywhere surfaces touch, so people work hard to reduce it — lubricants, smooth coatings, streamlined shapes, even magnetic levitation. But friction can also be a friend:[NCERT p.115] जहाँ भी सतहें छूती हैं वहाँ friction है, इसलिए लोग इसे कम करने में मेहनत करते हैं — lubricants, चिकनी coatings, streamlined आकार, यहाँ तक कि magnetic levitation।

Wrap a rope once around a rough branch and hold a heavy bucket — hard. Add just one more turn and it becomes much easier to hold. Friction does not grow in a simple straight-line way — a small change in contact makes a big change in grip. The same effect lets a few sailors hold a huge ship at a pier.

These questions — does friction depend on how hard surfaces press? is rolling friction less than sliding? — explain why the invention of the wheel was a turning point in human history. And Newton's laws hold across an enormous range, from a rolling coin to planets and stars; they need changing only near very massive objects, at speeds close to light, or at atomic scales.[NCERT p.115] ये सवाल — क्या friction इस पर निर्भर है कि सतहें कितनी ज़ोर से दबती हैं? [NCERT p.115]
