Work, Energy and Simple Machines

Lifting a bag, a falling coconut, a spinning water-mill, a seesaw — all are stories about energy moving around. This chapter gives you the "energy shortcut" for understanding motion, told mostly in pictures.

Newton's laws (Chapter 6) work well, but get messy when forces keep changing. Work and energy give a simpler route: track how much energy an object has, and you can predict its motion without following every step.

1. Work Done by a Constant Force [NCERT p.117-118]

Goal: Define work as force × displacement, know the joule, and spot when work is zero, positive or negative.Goal: work को force × displacement मानना, joule जानना, और पहचानना कि work कब zero, positive या negative है।

Lifting bags shows the pattern. Lift more bags (bigger force) over the same height → more work. Lift the same bag higher (bigger displacement) → more work. So work grows with both force and distance:[NCERT p.117] थैले उठाना पैटर्न दिखाता है।

W = F × s (force × displacement in the direction of the force)

The SI unit of work is the joule (J): 1 J = 1 N × 1 m. So 1 joule is the work done when a 1 N force moves an object 1 m along the force. (Also 1 J = 1 kg·m² s⁻².)[NCERT p.118] Work का SI unit joule (J) है: 1 J = 1 N × 1 m। [NCERT p.118]

Positive vs negative workPositive बनाम negative work

Positive (+)Positive (+) Force and displacement in the same direction — e.g. pushing a wheelchair forward. The object gains energy.
Negative (−)Negative (−) Force opposite to displacement — e.g. a goalkeeper stopping a ball. The object loses energy.

2. The Work–Energy Theorem [NCERT p.120]

Goal: See that work done on an object shows up as a change in its energy.

A thrown ball can knock over a wicket; a raised flowerpot can smash something if it falls. Each has gained a capacity to do work — that capacity is energy. The ball got it from the throw; the pot from being lifted.

work done on an object = change in its energy
work by hand → ball gains energy ball's energy → wicket moves
Figure 7.4 — Work-energy theorem: positive work gives the ball energy; the ball then transfers it to the wicket. Adapted from NCERT Fig. 7.8.
Meet a scientist — James Prescott Joule:एक वैज्ञानिक से मिलिए — James Prescott Joule: the unit of work and energy is named after him. He showed how mechanical and thermal (heat) energy are linked and can convert into each other.[NCERT p.120] work [NCERT p.120]

Example 7.3 (carrom): the moving striker does positive work on the white coin (gives it energy); by Newton's third law the white coin does negative work on the striker (takes energy back). The chain repeats when the white coin hits the black coin.[NCERT p.120] Example 7.3 (carrom): चलता striker सफ़ेद coin पर positive work करता है (energy देता है); Newton के तीसरे law से सफ़ेद coin striker पर negative work करता है (energy वापस लेता है)। [NCERT p.120]

3. Forms of Energy [NCERT p.121]

Goal: Name the forms of energy and see energy changing from one to another.

Energy constantly changes form: electricity → light (bulb) or heat (heater); chemical (food) → mechanical (muscles); mechanical → sound (a ringing bell).[NCERT p.121] Energy [NCERT p.121]

4. Mechanical Energy — Kinetic & Potential [NCERT p.121-127]

Goal: Use K = ½mv² and U = mgh, and see them trade off as an object moves.

4.1 Kinetic energy — energy of motion4.1 गतिज ऊर्जा — गति की energy

Apply force F over displacement s to speed an object from u to v. Using W = Fs, F = ma, and v² = u² + 2as, the work becomes W = ½m(v² − u²). Starting from rest (u = 0), all that work is stored as kinetic energy:[NCERT p.122] किसी वस्तु को u से v तक तेज़ करने के लिए displacement s पर force F लगाओ। W = Fs, F = ma, और v² = u² + 2as से, work बनता है W = ½m(v² − u²)।

K = ½ m v²

Mass:Mass: 2 kg, Speed:Speed: 10 m/s

Kinetic energy =गतिज ऊर्जा = 100.0 J

Double the speed = 4× the energy:speed दुगनी = energy 4 गुना: Because K depends on v², doubling speed multiplies kinetic energy by 4 (Example 7.4). This is why a car at 40 km/h is far more dangerous than at 20 km/h.[NCERT p.122] चूँकि K, v² पर निर्भर है, speed दुगनी करने से गतिज ऊर्जा 4 गुना (Example 7.4)।

A stretched slingshot, a bent bow, a compressed spring — all store energy in their shape and release it as motion. So do objects held apart against a force: separated magnets, separated charges, and a ball lifted against gravity. [NCERT p.123-124]

For a ball lifted to height h, the work done against gravity, W = mg × h, is stored as gravitational potential energy:[NCERT p.125] ऊँचाई h तक उठाई गेंद के लिए, gravity के विरुद्ध किया work, W = mg × h, गुरुत्वीय स्थितिज ऊर्जा के रूप में संचित होता है:[NCERT p.125]

U = m g h

Activity 7.1 proves it: drop a ball into sand from 1 m, then 2 m — the deeper depression shows more stored energy at greater height. Example 7.7: a 0.2 kg ball 10 m up has U = 0.2 × 10 × 10 = 20 J.[NCERT p.125-126] Activity 7.1 इसे सिद्ध करती है: गेंद को 1 m, फिर 2 m से रेत में गिराओ — गहरा गड्ढा ज़्यादा ऊँचाई पर ज़्यादा संचित energy दिखाता है। Example 7.7: एक 0.2 kg गेंद 10 m ऊपर, U = 0.2 × 10 × 10 = 20 J[NCERT p.125-126]

4.3 Conservation of mechanical energy4.3

Mechanical energy = kinetic + potential. As a ball falls, PE turns into KE but the total stays the same (mgh throughout) — if no friction acts. Watch the trade-off:[NCERT p.126-127] यांत्रिक ऊर्जा = गतिज + स्थितिज।

A PE = mgh (KE 0) B half PE, half KE C KE = mgh (PE 0) total = mgh always
Figure 7.5 — Free fall: purple (PE) shrinks as green (KE) grows, but their sum is always mgh. Adapted from NCERT Fig. 7.19.

PE =PE = 400 J, KE =KE = 0 J, Total =कुल = 400 J (constant!स्थिर!)

A pendulum shows the same dance: highest points = all PE, lowest point = all KE, and it climbs back almost to the same height. (In real life friction and air slowly stop it.) Example 7.8: a child sliding down height h reaches the bottom at v = √(2gh) — independent of the slide's shape or the child's mass![NCERT p.127-128] एक pendulum वही नृत्य दिखाता है: सबसे ऊँचे बिंदु = पूरी PE, सबसे नीचे = पूरी KE, और यह लगभग उसी ऊँचाई तक वापस चढ़ता है।

Worked example 7.9 — the truck escape rampहल किया उदाहरण 7.9 — ट्रक escape ramp
A 10000 kg truck at 72 km/h = 20 m/s (KE = 2,000,000 J) runs up a 30° sand ramp where sand pushes back with 50000 N. By the work–energy theorem, sand's work + PE rise = KE lost. Solving gives ramp length = 20 m. Energy accounting solves in a few lines what Newton's laws would make tedious.[NCERT p.128] एक 10000 kg ट्रक 72 km/h = 20 m/s पर (KE = 2,000,000 J) एक 30° रेत ramp पर चढ़ता है जहाँ रेत 50000 N से पीछे धकेलती है। work–energy theorem से, रेत का work + PE वृद्धि = खोई KE। [NCERT p.128]

A machine cannot reduce the total work, but it can change the size or direction of the force you apply. The force you apply is the effort; the force to overcome is the load. Their ratio is the mechanical advantage:[NCERT p.130] एक मशीन कुल work कम नहीं कर सकती, पर आपके लगाए force का आकार या दिशा बदल सकती है।

(i) truck uphill: chemical → kinetic + potential; (ii) unwinding watch spring: elastic PE → mechanical; (iii) photosynthesis: light → chemical; (iv) water from a dam: potential → kinetic; (v) burning matchstick: chemical → heat + light; (vi) firecracker: chemical → sound + light + heat + kinetic; (vii) microphone: sound → electrical; (viii) glowing bulb: electrical → light + heat; (ix) solar panel: light → electrical.[NCERT p.137] (i) [NCERT p.137]
Q5. 50 kg student to top of a 72.5 m building (g = 10): PE by lift vs by stairs?50 kg
(i) Lift: U = mgh = 50 × 10 × 72.5 = 36250 J. (ii) Stairs: same height ⇒ same 36250 J. (iii) Conclusion: gravitational PE depends only on height, not on the path.[NCERT p.137] (i) Lift: U = mgh = 50 × 10 × 72.5 = 36250 J।
Q6. Crane lifts mass m to the 10th floor, then to the 20th floor in double the time. Extra energy and power?
Twice the height ⇒ twice the energy (energy doubles). But time also doubles, so power P = W/t = (2W)/(2t) is the same. Extra energy = 100% more; extra power = 0.[NCERT p.137] दुगनी ऊँचाई ⇒ दुगनी energy। [NCERT p.137]
Q7. Energy to raise a flag with a pulley; does speed matter; if speed doubles, what about power?
Work = mgh depends only on the flag's weight and pole height, not on speed — so raising slow or fast needs the same work. But power = work/time, so doubling the speed halves the time and doubles the power needed.[NCERT p.137] Work = mgh केवल झंडे के वज़न और खंभे की ऊँचाई पर निर्भर, speed पर नहीं — इसलिए धीरे या तेज़ उठाने में समान work। पर power = work/time, इसलिए speed दुगनी करने से समय आधा और ज़रूरी power दुगनी[NCERT p.137]
Q8. Scooter (100 kg) + man (60 kg) reaches v; next day + son (40 kg). Ratio of fuel used?scooter (100 kg) + आदमी (60 kg) v पर पहुँचता है; अगले दिन + बेटा (40 kg)।
Energy = ½mv² for the same v, so fuel ∝ total mass. Day 1: 160 kg; Day 2: 200 kg. Ratio = 160 : 200 = 4 : 5.[NCERT p.137] Energy = ½mv² समान v पर, इसलिए ईंधन ∝ कुल mass। दिन 1: 160 kg; दिन 2: 200 kg। अनुपात = 160 : 200 = 4 : 5[NCERT p.137]
Q9. Seesaw: adult weighs twice the child, yet balanced. Draw the distances.Seesaw:
For balance, weight × distance must match: (2W) × d_adult = W × d_child ⇒ d_child = 2 × d_adult. So the child sits twice as far from the fulcrum as the adult (e.g. adult 1 m, child 2 m).[NCERT p.138] संतुलन के लिए वज़न × दूरी बराबर हो: (2W) × d_वयस्क = W × d_बच्चा ⇒ d_बच्चा = 2 × d_वयस्क। [NCERT p.138]
Q10. 2 kg ball thrown up at 20 m/s reaches 19.4 m (g = 10). (i) sign of gravity's work; (ii) work by air resistance.2 kg (i) gravity के work का चिह्न; (ii) वायु प्रतिरोध का work।
(i) Going up, gravity opposes motion → negative; coming down, gravity aids motion → positive. (ii) Initial KE = ½(2)(20²) = 400 J. PE at 19.4 m = 2 × 10 × 19.4 = 388 J. Missing energy = 400 − 388 = 12 J lost to air resistance (work by air = −12 J).[NCERT p.138] (i) [NCERT p.138]
Q11. 10 kg block, KE 180 J at 0 m, a force (area 50 J) acts to 4 m. Speed at 0 m and 4 m?10 kg block, 0 m
(i) At 0 m: ½(10)v² = 180 ⇒ v² = 36 ⇒ v = 6 m/s. (ii) Work by force = area under graph = 50 J, so KE at 4 m = 180 + 50 = 230 J ⇒ v² = 46 ⇒ v = ≈ 6.8 m/s. The block always speeds up (work is positive), so no negative acceleration.[NCERT p.138] (i) 0 m पर: ½(10)v² = 180 ⇒ v² = 36 ⇒ v = 6 m/s। (ii) force का work = graph के नीचे क्षेत्रफल = 50 J, तो 4 m पर KE = 180 + 50 = 230 J ⇒ v² = 46 ⇒ v = ≈ 6.8 m/s। [NCERT p.138]
Q12. Moon's gravity is 1/6 of Earth's. A ball thrown up reaches 8 m on Earth. How high on the Moon?
Same launch KE ⇒ mgh is the same, so h ∝ 1/g. With g one-sixth, height is 6 times: 8 × 6 = 48 m.[NCERT p.138] समान प्रारंभिक KE ⇒ mgh समान, इसलिए h ∝ 1/g।
Q13. 1000 kg car, speed–time graph: constant 35 m/s then brakes to stop.1000 kg गाड़ी, speed–time graph: पहले स्थिर 35 m/s फिर brake से रुकती है।
(i) A→B: constant speed (no net force). (ii) KE at A = ½(1000)(35²) = 612500 J. (iii) Work by brakes B→C = −612500 J (removes all the KE). (iv) It transforms into heat (and some sound) in the brakes/tyres.[NCERT p.138] (i) A→B: स्थिर speed (net force नहीं)। (ii) A पर KE = ½(1000)(35²) = 612500 J। (iii) brake का work B→C = −612500 J (सारी KE हटाता है)। [NCERT p.138]
Q14. 0.5 kg ball on a frictionless track; at O, v = 0, PE = 30 J. Find v at P (20 J), Q (10 J), R (0 J).0.5 kg
Total energy = 30 J everywhere. KE = 30 − PE, and v = √(2K/m) = √(4K). At P: K = 10 ⇒ v = √40 ≈ 6.3 m/s. At Q: K = 20 ⇒ v = √80 ≈ 8.9 m/s. At R: K = 30 ⇒ v = √120 ≈ 10.95 m/s.[NCERT p.138] कुल energy = 30 J हर जगह। KE = 30 − PE, और v = √(2K/m) = √(4K)। P पर: K = 10 ⇒ v = √40 ≈ 6.3 m/s। Q पर: K = 20 ⇒ v = √80 ≈ 8.9 m/s। R पर: K = 30 ⇒ v = √120 ≈ 10.95 m/s[NCERT p.138]
Q15. 1.5 kg coconut falls 10 m onto wet sand (g = 10). (i) speed on impact; (ii) depth if sand resists with 3000 N.1.5 kg
(i) v = √(2gh) = √(2 × 10 × 10) = √200 ≈ 14.1 m/s. (ii) Total energy = mgh = 1.5 × 10 × 10 = 150 J (plus the drop equals the KE). All 150 J is spent as force × depth: 3000 × d = 150 ⇒ d = 0.05 m = 5 cm.[NCERT p.138] (i) v = √(2gh) = √(2 × 10 × 10) = √200 ≈ 14.1 m/s। (ii) कुल energy = mgh = 1.5 × 10 × 10 = 150 J। सारी 150 J force × गहराई में खर्च: 3000 × d = 150 ⇒ d = 0.05 m = 5 cm[NCERT p.138]

Previous-Year Style Questions (PYQ)पिछले सालों जैसे सवाल (PYQ)

PYQ 1. Define 1 joule of work. (1 mark)
1 joule is the work done when a force of 1 newton moves an object 1 metre in the direction of the force. 1 J = 1 N·m।
PYQ 2. An object of 5 kg is raised to 4 m. Find its potential energy (g = 10). (2 marks)
U = mgh = 5 × 10 × 4 = 200 J. U = mgh = 5 × 10 × 4 = 200 J
PYQ 3. Why does a machine's mechanical advantage not reduce the total work done? (2 marks)
A machine reduces the force but increases the distance over which it acts (or vice versa), so the product force × distance = work stays the same. It changes convenience, not the energy.
PYQ 4. A 60 W bulb runs for 1 minute. How much energy does it use? (2 marks)
Energy = power × time = 60 W × 60 s = 3600 J. Energy = power × time = 60 W × 60 s = 3600 J

Try it yourself: turn a pen barrel + rubber band into a launcher — the more you stretch, the farther the refill flies (elastic PE → KE). Or build your own lever/pulley/ramp from cardboard and rulers and measure its mechanical advantage. Free PhET simulations (Energy Skate Park, Pendulum Lab) let you watch KE and PE trade off as you change mass, height and friction.[NCERT p.139] खुद करके देखो: एक पेन की नली + रबड़ बैंड को launcher बनाओ — जितना ज़्यादा खींचो, refill उतना दूर उड़े (प्रत्यास्थ PE → KE)। [NCERT p.139]

The quest continues — dark energy:खोज जारी है — dark energy: The Universe is not just expanding, its expansion is speeding up. To explain this, scientists propose a mysterious "dark energy" that cannot be exchanged with any other form — and it may decide the fate of the Universe.[NCERT p.139] ब्रह्मांड सिर्फ़ फैल नहीं रहा, इसका फैलाव तेज़ हो रहा है। [NCERT p.139]
