Atomic Foundations of Matter

Two gases combine and make water that puts out fire. Mass never vanishes. Atoms join by sharing or swapping electrons. This chapter turns those rules into pictures — and lets you build formulae yourself.

When hydrogen (burns) and oxygen (feeds fire) combine, they make water (puts out fire) — the compound behaves nothing like its elements, yet the total mass is exactly preserved. Two "laws of combination" explain this, and Dalton's atoms make sense of both.

1. Law of Conservation of Mass [NCERT p.163-166]

Goal: Show that total mass is unchanged in physical and chemical changes — if nothing escapes.Goal:

Dissolve salt in water: the solution weighs exactly (water + salt). Now react vinegar with baking soda in a balloon-capped flask — CO₂ gas is made, but if the balloon traps it, the balance still reads the same. Matter is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction (Antoine Lavoisier, 1789).[NCERT p.165] पानी में नमक घोलिए: घोल का वज़न ठीक (पानी + नमक) होता है। [NCERT p.165]

2. Law of Constant Proportions [NCERT p.167]

Goal: Show a compound always has its elements in a fixed mass ratio.Goal:

Joseph Proust: in any pure compound the elements combine in a fixed ratio by mass, whatever the source. Water is always hydrogen : oxygen = 1 : 8 — river water, sea water, borewell water, all the same. Decompose 9 g of water and you always get 1 g H + 8 g O.[NCERT p.167] Joseph Proust: [NCERT p.167]

3. Dalton's Atomic Theory [NCERT p.168]

Goal: See how Dalton's postulates explain both laws.

Dalton said atoms simply rearrange in a reaction — never made or destroyed — which explains why mass is conserved and why ratios stay fixed.[NCERT p.168] Dalton [NCERT p.168]

4. How Atoms Combine — Chemical Bonds [NCERT p.169-173]

Goal: Tell a covalent bond (sharing) from an ionic bond (transfer).Goal:

A molecule is a neutral group of two or more atoms that can exist on its own. Atoms bond to reach a stable octet, in two ways — and the force that holds them is a chemical bond.[NCERT p.169] एक अणु (molecule) दो या अधिक atoms का उदासीन समूह है जो स्वयं अस्तित्व में रह सके। [NCERT p.169]

Covalent bond — SHAREसहसंयोजी बंध — साझाatoms share electron pairs (usually two non-metals). e.g. H₂, O₂, HCl, H₂O.atoms electron जोड़े साझा करते हैं (आमतौर पर दो अधातु)। जैसे H₂, O₂, HCl, H₂O।
Ionic bond — TRANSFERआयनिक बंध — स्थानांतरणone atom gives electrons, another takes; opposite ions attract (metal + non-metal). e.g. NaCl.

Water (H₂O): oxygen needs 2 electrons, each hydrogen needs 1 — so two hydrogen atoms each share a pair with one oxygen. Covalent compounds are named with prefixes (mono, di, tri, tetra…): CO = carbon monoxide, CO₂ = carbon dioxide, PCl₃ = phosphorus trichloride, SF₆ = sulfur hexafluoride.[NCERT p.171-172] पानी (H₂O): oxygen को 2 electron चाहिए, हर hydrogen को 1 — इसलिए दो hydrogen atoms हर एक एक जोड़ा एक oxygen से साझा करते हैं। से: CO = carbon monoxide, CO₂ = carbon dioxide, PCl₃ = phosphorus trichloride, SF₆ = sulfur hexafluoride।[NCERT p.171-172]

Positive ions (cations, e.g. Na⁺, Mg²⁺, Al³⁺) form when atoms lose electrons; negative ions (anions, e.g. Cl⁻, O²⁻) form when atoms gain electrons. In a solid, NaCl is not single molecules but a repeating 3-D crystal lattice where each Na⁺ is surrounded by 6 Cl⁻ and vice-versa.[NCERT p.172-173] धन आयन (cation, जैसे Na⁺, Mg²⁺, Al³⁺) तब बनते हैं जब atom electron खोते हैं; ऋण आयन (anion, जैसे Cl⁻, O²⁻) तब जब electron पाते हैं। [NCERT p.172-173]

5. Writing Chemical Formulae — the Criss-Cross [NCERT p.175-177]

Goal: Use the criss-cross of valencies to write any formula.

Write the symbols, write each valency below, then cross them over as subscripts. Divide by a common factor to get the simplest ratio; drop a subscript of 1; use brackets for two or more of the same polyatomic ion.[NCERT p.175] प्रतीक लिखो, नीचे हर संयोजकता लिखो, फिर उन्हें क्रॉस करके subscript बनाओ। [NCERT p.175]

7. Molecular Mass & Formula Unit Mass [NCERT p.179-180]

Goal: Add atomic masses to get molecular mass (covalent) or formula unit mass (ionic).Goal:

Molecular mass = sum of the atomic masses of all atoms in a molecule (for covalent compounds). Ionic compounds don't form molecules, so we use the formula unit mass — the sum for the simplest ion ratio.[NCERT p.179] आणविक द्रव्यमान = अणु में सभी atoms के परमाणु द्रव्यमानों का योग (सहसंयोजी यौगिकों के लिए)। [NCERT p.179]

Hg²⁺ (lost 2): 78 e⁻, neutrons = 201 − 80 = 121.[NCERT p.183] Al (उदासीन): 13 e⁻, neutron = 27 − 13 = 14। Br⁻ (1 पाया): 36 e⁻, neutron = 80 − 35 = 45। Hg²⁺ (2 खोए): 78 e⁻, neutron = 201 − 80 = 121।[NCERT p.183]

Previous-Year Style Questions (PYQ)पिछले सालों जैसे सवाल (PYQ)

PYQ 1. State the law of conservation of mass. (1 mark)
Mass can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction — the total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products.
PYQ 2. Calculate the molecular mass of ammonia (NH₃). (2 marks)
NH₃ = 14 + (1×3) = 17 u. NH₃ = 14 + (1×3) = 17 u
PYQ 3. Differentiate between a cation and an anion with one example each. (2 marks)
A cation is a positive ion formed by losing electrons (e.g. Na⁺); an anion is a negative ion formed by gaining electrons (e.g. Cl⁻).
PYQ 4. Write the formula of aluminium sulfate and name the ions in it. (2 marks)
Al³⁺ + SO₄²⁻ criss-cross → Al₂(SO₄)₃. Ions: aluminium ion (Al³⁺) and sulfate ion (SO₄²⁻). Al³⁺ + SO₄²⁻ criss-cross → Al₂(SO₄)₃।

The Journey Beyond

Try it: decompose water from different sources and confirm the fixed hydrogen:oxygen ratio; make a "cation–anion card game" where matching cards form real compounds; or play with the free PhET "Build a Molecule" simulation. And a puzzle scientists still probe — are there any changes that seem to break the conservation of mass? (Nuclear reactions, where a tiny mass converts to huge energy — you'll meet this in higher grades.)[NCERT p.183] करके देखो: अलग-अलग स्रोतों के पानी को विघटित कर तय hydrogen:oxygen अनुपात की पुष्टि करो; एक "cation–anion कार्ड खेल" बनाओ जहाँ मेल खाते कार्ड असली यौगिक बनाएँ; या मुफ़्त PhET "Build a Molecule" simulation आज़माओ। [NCERT p.183]
