A plucked string, a bat hunting in the dark, a sonar ping in the deep sea — all are the same story: a vibration travelling as a wave of squeezes and stretches through a medium.
Sound is a form of energy made by vibrations. It travels only through a medium (solid, liquid or gas) as a longitudinal wave — never through empty space. This chapter shows how it is made, how it moves, and how we (and bats!) use it.Sound
Remember from Chapter 7:Chapter 7
Sound is a form of energy; energy is never created or destroyed, only converted. Some vibration energy becomes sound energy.
Speed = distance ÷ time — we will use this for echoes and sonar.Speed = distance ÷ समय — हम इसे echo व sonar के लिए उपयोग करेंगे।
1. How Sound Is Produced [NCERT p.185-186]
Goal: See that every sound comes from a vibrating object.
Pluck a stretched rubber band — while it vibrates, you hear sound; when it stops, the sound stops. Touch your throat while speaking and feel your vocal cords vibrate. Strike a tuning fork on a rubber pad and dip it in water — the ripples prove it is vibrating. Sound is produced by vibration (a rapid to-and-fro motion). The vibrating object is the source.[NCERT p.185-186]एक तनी रबड़ बैंड को खींचकर छोड़िए — जब तक यह vibrate करती है, sound सुनाई देती है; रुकते ही sound रुक जाती है। [NCERT p.185-186]

2. Sound Needs a Medium [NCERT p.187]
Goal: Show sound travels through solids, liquids, gases — but not vacuum.
Put your ear to a desk and scratch the far side — the knock is louder through the wood (solid). Tap two spoons underwater — you still hear it (liquid). But in the vacuum bell-jar experiment, as air is pumped out, an electric bell's sound fades to nothing even while you see it ringing. So sound needs a material medium; it cannot travel through a vacuum.[NCERT p.187]कान मेज़ पर लगाकर दूसरी ओर खरोंचिए — आवाज़ लकड़ी (solid) से ज़्यादा तेज़ सुनाई देती है। [NCERT p.187]

Why can't astronauts hear each other in space?अंतरिक्ष में अंतरिक्षयात्री एक-दूसरे को क्यों नहीं सुन सकते?Outer space is nearly a vacuum — no air to carry sound. Astronauts on a spacewalk talk through radios in their suits, not through the "air".
3. How Sound Travels — Compressions & Rarefactions [NCERT p.188-191]
Goal: Picture a sound wave as moving squeezes (C) and stretches (R); know it is longitudinal.
Push-and-pull one end of a slinky and a disturbance travels along it — but a marked coil only oscillates in place; it does not travel. Sound is the same. As a piston pushes air, it makes a high-density compression (C); as it pulls back, a low-density rarefaction (R). C and R travel outward while air particles only jiggle about their spots.[NCERT p.188-189]एक slinky के एक सिरे को धकेलें-खींचें और एक disturbance उसके साथ चलता है — पर एक marked coil केवल अपनी जगह oscillate करती है; वह चलती नहीं। [NCERT p.188-189]

Longitudinal wave — SOUNDLongitudinal wave — soundparticles vibrate parallel to the wave's motion (like a slinky push-pull).Particles wave
Transverse wave — LIGHTTransverse wave — lightparticles vibrate perpendicular to the wave (like a rope shaken up-down). Light needs no medium.
Sound is a mechanical wave (needs a medium) and specifically a longitudinal wave. Light is a transverse wave that can cross a vacuum — which is why sunlight reaches us but the Sun's roar never does.[NCERT p.190-191]Sound [NCERT p.190-191]

5. Speed of Sound — v = λν [NCERT p.196-197]
Goal: Use v = wavelength × frequency, and know sound is fastest in solids.
v = λ × ν (speed = wavelength × frequency)
Sound is fastest in solids, slower in liquids, slowest in gases (particles are packed closest in solids, so they pass the disturbance on quickest). In air it also rises with temperature and humidity: ≈ 331 m/s at 0 °C, ≈ 344 m/s at 22 °C. Changing the source's frequency changes the wavelength, but the speed stays the same for a given medium.[NCERT p.196]Sound solid [NCERT p.196]

Goal: Explain echoes, the 17 m rule, and reverberation.Goal: echo, 17 m law, और reverberation समझाना।
Sound bounces off hard surfaces, obeying the same laws of reflection as light. A reflected sound heard separately from the original is an echo. Our brain needs a gap of at least 0.1 s to hear two sounds apart. In 0.1 s sound travels 34 m to the wall and back — so the wall must be at least 17 m away for an echo.[NCERT p.201]Sound [NCERT p.201]

Try it: measure the speed of sound in a big field — a friend bursts a balloon, you start a stopwatch on seeing the burst and stop on hearing the pop, then divide distance by time. Or build a paper cone megaphone and hear how it focuses sound. Sound is now used to record the first sounds from Mars, to track ocean temperature from distant earthquakes, and even to study soil health from the tiny crackles of microbes.[NCERT p.207]करके देखो: एक बड़े मैदान में sound की speed नापो — एक दोस्त गुब्बारा फोड़े, आप फोड़ने को देखकर stopwatch शुरू करें और pop सुनकर रोकें, फिर distance को समय से भाग दें। [NCERT p.207]
