From glowing jellyfish to soaring eagles, from tiny bacteria to giant trees — life on Earth comes in millions of forms. This chapter is the map that helps us sort, name and protect all of them.
The huge variety of living things is called biodiversity. Because there are millions of organisms, scientists group them by shared features — this is classification. The modern plan has five kingdoms and a ladder of groups from kingdom down to species, and every organism gets a two-word scientific name.
Remember from before:पहले जो सीखा था:
From Chapter 2 (Cell): cells can be prokaryotic (no true nucleus, like bacteria) or eukaryotic (a true, membrane-bound nucleus).Chapter 2 (Cell)
Organisms are autotrophs (make their own food, like plants) or heterotrophs (depend on others for food).
From Chapter 3 (Tissues): bigger plants and animals have special tissues — for example xylem and phloem carry water and food.
1. Biodiversity and India's Hotspots [NCERT p.228–229]
Goal: After this section you can explain what biodiversity is, what endemic species are, and what makes a biodiversity hotspot.
Think of a single neighbourhood that has a vegetable seller, a doctor, a teacher, a plumber and a cook. If even one leaves, daily life gets harder for everyone. Nature works the same way — each kind of living thing does a job, and together they keep the place running.
The enormous variety of living organisms on Earth is called biodiversity. It is not just a list of names — it keeps nature stable. Tiny ocean algae release most of the oxygen we breathe, fungi and bacteria rot fallen leaves into rich soil, and birds, bees and bats pollinate flowers. Humans depend on biodiversity for food, medicine, shelter and work; farmers have long protected many crop varieties because that variety lowers the risk of total crop failure.[NCERT p.228–229]पृथ्वी पर जीवों की इस बहुत बड़ी विविधता को biodiversity कहते हैं। [NCERT p.228–229]
Endemic species — found only hereEndemic species —
Some species live only in one region of the world and nowhere else naturally. These are endemic species. India has many, especially in the Western Ghats and the North-East.[NCERT p.229]कुछ species दुनिया में सिर्फ़ एक region में मिलते हैं, और कहीं भी प्राकृतिक रूप से नहीं। [NCERT p.229]

Biodiversity hotspotsBiodiversity hotspots
Regions that have a large number of endemic species and have also lost a lot of their natural habitat are called biodiversity hotspots. They are extra-important to protect. Global hotspots in and around India include the Western Ghats, Indo-Burma (including North-East India), the Himalayas, and Sundaland (including the Nicobar Islands).[NCERT p.229]जिन regions में endemic species की बड़ी संख्या हो और जिनका काफ़ी प्राकृतिक habitat भी ख़त्म हो चुका हो, उन्हें biodiversity hotspots कहते हैं। [NCERT p.229]

2. How Has Biodiversity Evolved? [NCERT p.229–230]
Goal: After this section you can explain, in simple words, why life today looks so different from life long ago.
In a class, some students are taller, some run faster, some fall sick less. Over many years, the features that help survival get passed on more often. Tiny differences, added up over a very long time, change the whole group.
The biodiversity we see today was not always the same. Small differences (variations) between individuals affected their chances of survival and reproduction in a changing world. Helpful variations were passed on, generation after generation, and slowly added up to give new forms of life. So today's diversity is the outcome of continuous change over a vast span of time, shaped by how organisms interact with their surroundings. The tool that lets us study this story in an organised way is classification.[NCERT p.229–230]आज जो biodiversity हम देखते हैं वह हमेशा से ऐसी नहीं थी।
Old Indian traditions — like the Sangam Tinai classification of landscapes and the protection of sacred groves — show a deep understanding of habitats and their living things, and quietly preserved local diversity long before modern ecology had a name for it.[NCERT p.230]पुरानी भारतीय परम्पराएँ — जैसे landscapes का Sangam Tinai वर्गीकरण और sacred groves (पवित्र वन) की रक्षा — habitats और उनके जीवों की गहरी समझ दिखाती हैं, और आधुनिक ecology के नाम देने से बहुत पहले ही स्थानीय diversity को चुपचाप बचाए रखती थीं।[NCERT p.230]

Small variations + long time → new forms of life.
Today's diversity is a result of continuous change, not a fixed set.
3. Why and How We Classify [NCERT p.230–233]
Goal: After this section you can say why classification is needed and list the main features scientists use to group organisms.
The libraryLibrary वाली बातImagine a library where thousands of books lie scattered on the floor. Finding On the Origin of Species would be almost impossible. Arrange the books by subject and author, and any book is easy to find. Classifying millions of organisms does exactly this for life. On the Origin of Species
Grouping organisms by their similarities and differences is called biological classification. The same organism can fall into different groups depending on the criterion (the feature) you pick — so scientists agree on a set of useful features. The main ones are:[NCERT p.230–231]जीवों को उनकी समानताओं और भिन्नताओं से समूहों में बाँटना biological classification कहलाता है।
External features — shape, size and body plan.External features — आकार, size और body plan।
Mode of nutrition — autotrophic or heterotrophic.Mode of nutrition — autotrophic या heterotrophic।

Similar features usually mean organisms share a common ancestor. Classification helps us: study life in an organised way, see how organisms are related, name newly discovered organisms, support conservation, and give scientists worldwide one common system to talk about life.[NCERT p.231–233]मिलते-जुलते features का अक्सर मतलब होता है कि जीवों का कोई common ancestor है। [NCERT p.231–233]
Case study — the four hornbills of PakkeCase study — Pakke के चार hornbills
The Pakke Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh records nearly 300 bird species — including four hornbills: the Rufous-necked, Oriental Pied, Great and Wreathed hornbill. They nest only in large old trees and eat particular fruits, so different hornbills live in different parts of the forest. Telling them apart (classifying them) lets scientists ask sharp questions: which plants and animals are closely linked, and what happens if the old trees disappear?[NCERT p.232]Arunachal Pradesh का Pakke Tiger Reserve लगभग 300 bird species दर्ज करता है — जिनमें चार hornbills हैं: Rufous-necked, Oriental Pied, Great और Wreathed hornbill।

A school first splits students into just "boys" and "girls". Then it needs classes, then sections, then houses — as it learns more, the sorting gets better. Scientists improved their sorting of life in the very same way, especially after the microscope let them see hidden details.
Aristotle (4th century BCE) grouped animals by habitat — land, water, air. In the 18th century the two-kingdom system split life into Plantae and Animalia. But where do Amoeba, Paramecium and bacteria fit? They move like animals yet are single-celled. So Protista was added (three kingdoms). Then microscopes showed that bacteria have no true nucleus, so they were split off into Monera (four kingdoms). Finally, because fungi feed by absorbing food rather than making it, they got their own kingdom — giving the five-kingdom system of Robert Whittaker (1969).[NCERT p.232–233]Aristotle (4th century BCE) [NCERT p.232–233]

In the five-kingdom plan, every organism is sorted using four simple questions: cell type (prokaryote or eukaryote), level of organisation (unicellular or multicellular), cell wall (present or absent, and made of what), and mode of nutrition (autotroph or heterotroph). The flowchart below shows how those questions lead to each kingdom.[NCERT p.233–234]Five-kingdom plan में हर जीव को चार आसान सवालों से छाँटा जाता है: cell type (prokaryote या eukaryote), level of organisation (unicellular या multicellular), cell wall (है या नहीं, और किस चीज़ की), और mode of nutrition (autotroph या heterotroph)। [NCERT p.233–234]

Monera are single-celled organisms with no true nucleus (prokaryotes): bacteria and cyanobacteria. They live everywhere — soil, water, air, hot springs and even inside us. Some are harmful (pathogens), but many are useful: Lactobacillus sets curd, Rhizobium enriches soil with nitrogen, and gut bacteria in cattle produce biogas from dung. Cyanobacteria can make their own food. Some bacteria even break down oil, pesticides and sewage.[NCERT p.234–235]Monera single-celled [NCERT p.234–235]
Bridging science and society — Ram Bux SinghScience और समाज का पुल — Ram Bux SinghKnown as the "Father of Modern Biogas", Ram Bux Singh set up India's first scientifically designed biogas plant at Ramnagar, Sitapur (Uttar Pradesh) in 1957, and later built low-cost plants for villages and helped other countries. His work used Monera bacteria to turn waste into clean energy.[NCERT p.235]"Father of Modern Biogas" कहलाने वाले Ram Bux Singh ने 1957 में Ramnagar, Sitapur (Uttar Pradesh) में India का पहला वैज्ञानिक ढंग से बना biogas plant लगाया, और बाद में गाँवों के लिए सस्ते plants बनाए और दूसरे देशों की भी मदद की। [NCERT p.235]
Protista are single-celled organisms with a true nucleus (eukaryotes), living in water or moist places: Amoeba, Paramecium, Chlamydomonas, Euglena. Some make their own food, some eat others. They are an important link in water food chains — some release oxygen, some are food for tiny animals, and some act as decomposers.[NCERT p.235–236]Protista single-celled [NCERT p.235–236]
Kingdom Fungi — the decomposersKingdom Fungi — decomposers
Fungi are mostly multicellular eukaryotes with a cell wall made of chitin. They do not make their own food — they absorb nutrients through fine threads that together form a network called mycelium. Most are saprophytes (they feed on dead matter), which makes them nature's key decomposers: they rot fallen leaves and dead bodies and return minerals to the soil. Examples: yeast (single-celled, but chitin wall → fungi), Aspergillus, and mushrooms. Some, like Penicillium, give us antibiotics.[NCERT p.236]Fungi

Picture buildings getting more advanced: first a tent (no rooms), then a one-room hut, then a house with a corridor, then a multi-storey building with lifts and a steel frame. Animals are multicellular heterotrophs that usually move and respond quickly. The big dividing feature is the notochord — a flexible rod along the back. Chordates — protochordates and vertebratesChordates — protochordates और vertebrates
Protochordates (like Amphioxus) have a notochord at least once in life — a bridge between simple animals and true backboned ones. Vertebrates have a real backbone that protects the spinal cord and supports a bigger body. They fall into five groups: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, told apart by habitat, body covering and how they reproduce.[NCERT p.243–244]Protochordates [NCERT p.243–244]

8. Adaptations and the Classification Ladder [NCERT p.244]
Goal: After this section you can give examples of body features that suit an animal to its home, and put the classification levels in order from kingdom to species.
A postal address goes from broad to exact: Country → State → City → Street → House. The classification ladder works the same way — it pinpoints exactly which organism you mean.
The animal variety we see today comes from structural changes over long time. Fins and gills let fish swim and breathe in water; feathers and hollow bones let birds fly; fat storage helps camels in deserts; thick fur keeps polar bears warm; and mammary glands in mammals feed the young. Each feature fits the animal to its surroundings.[NCERT p.244]आज जो animal variety हम देखते हैं वह लम्बे समय में हुए structural changes से आई है। [NCERT p.244]
The hierarchy: Kingdom → SpeciesHierarchy: Kingdom → Species
Inside a kingdom, organisms are sorted into smaller and smaller groups: Kingdom → Phylum → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species. As you go down, each group has fewer members but they share more features. Species is the basic unit — similar organisms that can breed among themselves.[NCERT p.244]किसी kingdom के भीतर जीवों को छोटे-छोटे समूहों में बाँटते हैं: Kingdom → Phylum → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species। [NCERT p.244]

9. Scientific Names — The Binomial System [NCERT p.245–246]
Goal: After this section you can write a scientific name correctly and explain why one is needed.
A tiger is bagh in Hindi, puli in Tamil, tigre in French. If scientists in different places used local names, there would be confusion. So every organism gets ONE worldwide two-word name — like a unique ID.Tiger
This worldwide naming, called binomial nomenclature, was introduced by Carolus Linnaeus. Each name has two Latin parts: the genus (a group of closely related species) and the species. For example, the tiger and the lion share the genus Panthera — the roaring cats — as Panthera tigris and Panthera leo.[NCERT p.245–246]इस दुनिया-भर के नामकरण को binomial nomenclature कहते हैं, जिसे Carolus Linnaeus ने शुरू किया। [NCERT p.245–246]

When scientists began comparing organisms at the DNA level, they found microscopic life is even more varied than five kingdoms showed. In 1977 Carl Woese proposed three domains above the kingdoms: Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya.[NCERT p.246]जब scientists ने जीवों की DNA स्तर पर तुलना शुरू की, तो पाया कि सूक्ष्म जीवन पाँच kingdoms से भी ज़्यादा विविध है। [NCERT p.246]

10. Fossils and Biodiversity Under Threat [NCERT p.246–247]
Goal: After this section you can say how fossils tell the story of life, and why biodiversity must be protected.
Think of layers of old newspapers stacked in a store-room. The ones at the bottom are the oldest. Rock layers work the same way — deeper layers hold older, simpler life, so fossils read like a diary of life through time.
Fossils are the preserved remains or impressions of plants and animals found in layers of rock, sand and mud. Usually, older (deeper) layers hold simpler organisms and newer layers hold more complex ones. So fossils are natural records that show how life has changed over millions of years.[NCERT p.246]Fossils [NCERT p.246]

His work linked today's plants to their ancestors and showed that life on Earth has a long, connected history.[NCERT p.247]Birbal Sahni ने fossil plants का अध्ययन किया और Lucknow में Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) की स्थापना की, जो आज भी प्राचीन पौधों और पुराने environments पर काम करती है। [NCERT p.247]
Biodiversity under threatBiodiversity
Every species — big or small — has a job: plants make food and oxygen, animals pollinate and spread seeds, microbes recycle nutrients. Human activities like pollution, deforestation, over-use of resources and climate change are shrinking biodiversity. When one species disappears, others that depend on it may also decline and even vanish. Protecting hotspots and ecosystems keeps the whole web of life healthy.[NCERT p.247]हर species — बड़ा हो या छोटा — कोई न कोई काम करता है: पौधे food और oxygen बनाते हैं, animals pollination और seed फैलाते हैं, microbes nutrients recycle करते हैं। [NCERT p.247]

Solved NCERT Questions (Revise, Reflect, Refine)हल किए गए NCERT सवाल (Revise, Reflect, Refine)
Q1. Meena and Hari saw an animal. Hari called it an insect, Meena an earthworm. Which option confirms it is an insect?
(ii) Body with jointed legs. Jointed legs are a defining feature of arthropods (insects). An earthworm (annelid) has a soft, segmented body with no jointed legs.[NCERT p.241–242](ii) Body with jointed legs. [NCERT p.241–242]
Q2. Which feature of sponge cells supports placing them in the animal kingdom?
(iii) Presence of a cell membrane. Sponge cells have only a cell membrane (no cell wall) and are heterotrophic — both are animal features. A cell wall or the ability to photosynthesise would point to plants, not animals.[NCERT p.241](iii) Presence of a cell membrane. [NCERT p.241]
Q3. Observe two different animals around you. What features help you tell them apart, and how do these place them into groups?
Model answer: Compare a house crow and a garden lizard. Body covering (feathers vs scales), limbs (wings vs four legs), and reproduction (the crow lays hard-shelled eggs in a nest; the lizard lays eggs on land) differ. By these features the crow goes to birds and the lizard to reptiles — both are vertebrates, but body covering and reproduction sort them into different classes.[NCERT p.230–231, 243–244]नमूना उत्तर: एक कौवे और एक छिपकली की तुलना करो। [NCERT p.230–231, 243–244]
Q4. Why is cellular organisation a more fundamental basis for classification than the presence of xylem and phloem?
Every organism is made of cells, so cell structure (prokaryote vs eukaryote, unicellular vs multicellular) is a feature shared by all life and divides it at the highest level. Xylem and phloem occur only in some plants, so they cannot sort bacteria, protists, fungi or animals. A basis must apply to every organism — cellular organisation does; vascular tissue does not.[NCERT p.230–234]हर जीव cells से बना है, इसलिए cell structure (prokaryote बनाम eukaryote, unicellular बनाम multicellular) ऐसा feature है जो सभी जीवन में होता है और इसे सबसे ऊँचे स्तर पर बाँटता है। [NCERT p.230–234]
Q5. An unlabelled slide shows a single-celled organism with a well-defined nucleus and many cilia. Which group does it most likely belong to? Give reasons.
Protista. A well-defined nucleus means it is a eukaryote (so not Monera), and being single-celled rules out Fungi, Plantae and Animalia. A unicellular eukaryote that moves with cilia is a protist like Paramecium.[NCERT p.235–236]Protista. [NCERT p.235–236]
Q6. How does the diversity of organisms contribute to the balance and stability of an ecosystem?
Different organisms do different jobs — producers make food, consumers eat, decomposers recycle, pollinators help plants reproduce. This spread of roles keeps food webs working and lets the ecosystem recover after a disturbance. If diversity is high, the loss of one species is less likely to collapse the whole system, because others can fill in.[NCERT p.228–229]अलग-अलग जीव अलग काम करते हैं — producers food बनाते हैं, consumers खाते हैं, decomposers recycle करते हैं, pollinators plants की reproduction में मदद करते हैं। [NCERT p.228–229]
Q7. If all unicellular organisms were put into a single kingdom, what problems would arise?
It would force prokaryotes (bacteria, no true nucleus) and eukaryotes (Amoeba, true nucleus) into one group, hiding the most basic difference between them. It would also mix autotrophs with heterotrophs. This is exactly why bacteria sit in Monera and single-celled eukaryotes in Protista — separate kingdoms.[NCERT p.232–235]इससे prokaryotes (bacteria, true nucleus नहीं) और eukaryotes (Amoeba, true nucleus) एक ही group में आ जाते, और इनके बीच का सबसे बुनियादी फ़र्क छिप जाता। [NCERT p.232–235]
Q8. Viruses were studied earlier. Why are they not placed in any of the five kingdoms?
The five-kingdom system is built on cells. A virus has no cell and no cellular organisation; outside a host it is inert and cannot carry out life processes on its own — it only multiplies inside a living host cell. Since it is neither clearly living nor cellular, it does not fit any kingdom.[NCERT p.233–234, 246]Five-kingdom system cells [NCERT p.233–234, 246]
Q9. Would you make a separate category for viruses or keep them outside the system? Justify, and say what this tells us about classification.
Either choice is acceptable if justified. One can argue for a separate category because viruses carry genetic material and evolve; or for keeping them outside because they lack cells and cannot live independently. Both views show the same thing: classification is not final — it changes as we learn more.[NCERT p.246]कोई भी चुनाव सही है अगर कारण हो। [NCERT p.246]
Q10. Viruses have genetic material but lack cellular organisation. Which features keep them out of the five kingdoms, and what does this show about the limits of classification?
They lack a cell and cellular organisation, and cannot perform life processes on their own. Because the five-kingdom plan assumes every organism is cellular, viruses fall through the cracks. This shows classification systems have limits and sometimes must be revised for cases they were not designed for.[NCERT p.246]इनमें cell और cellular organisation नहीं होती, और ये अपने आप life processes नहीं कर सकते। [NCERT p.246]
Q11. Pteridophytes and bryophytes both lack flowers and seeds, yet are in different groups. Explain using their key features.
Bryophytes (mosses) have no vascular tissue, no true roots/stems/leaves, stay small, and depend on moisture. Pteridophytes (ferns) do have vascular tissue (xylem and phloem) and true roots, stems and leaves. This presence or absence of vascular tissue is the key feature that separates them.[NCERT p.237–238]Bryophytes (mosses) [NCERT p.237–238]
Q12. In the hierarchy, which group — class or genus — has fewer members but more features in common? Explain.
Genus. A genus sits lower than a class in the ladder (Class → Order → Family → Genus). As you go down, groups hold fewer organisms and those organisms are more alike — so a genus has fewer members but they share more features than the members of a class.[NCERT p.244]Genus. [NCERT p.244]
Q13. A new organism shows locomotion and autotrophic nutrition. Which character(s) would place it in Protista under the five-kingdom system?
If it is a single-celled eukaryote (true nucleus) that can both move and make its own food, it fits Protista — exactly like Euglena, which swims with a flagellum yet photosynthesises in light. The deciding character is being a unicellular eukaryote that combines locomotion with autotrophic nutrition.[NCERT p.235–236]अगर यह एक single-celled eukaryote (true nucleus) है जो चल भी सकता है और अपना food भी बना सकता है, तो यह Protista में फिट होता है — बिल्कुल Euglena की तरह, जो flagellum से तैरता है फिर भी रोशनी में photosynthesis करता है। [NCERT p.235–236]
Q14. A researcher identifies a unicellular eukaryote as a fungus. What identification key keeps a unicellular organism in Kingdom Fungi?
A chitin cell wall together with heterotrophic, absorptive (saprophytic) nutrition. Yeast is single-celled, yet because its wall is made of chitin and it absorbs nutrients, it is placed in Fungi. So the key is "chitin wall + absorbs food", not the number of cells.[NCERT p.236]Chitin की cell wall के साथ heterotrophic, absorptive (saprophytic) nutrition। [NCERT p.236]

Identifications: P → Monera (prokaryote/archaea-like), Q → Fungi, R → Protista (Euglena-like), S → Animalia (a vertebrate, e.g. a fish/amphibian), T → a virus.
(i) Clearly Fungi → Q: a filamentous body with a cell wall, no chlorophyll, growing on dead matter (saprophytic).(i)
(ii) Monera → P: it has no true nucleus (a prokaryote).(ii) Monera → P: इसमें true nucleus नहीं (prokaryote)।
(iii) R and Q are both eukaryotic but differ in level of organisation (R unicellular, Q multicellular) and nutrition (R can photosynthesise; Q is a chitin-walled absorptive heterotroph). So R → Protista, Q → Fungi.(iii) R
(iv) S cannot be classified by nutrition alone because all animals are heterotrophs — nutrition won't separate S from fungi or many protists. We need cellular organisation, tissues and the backbone to place it.(iv) S
(v) T lacks cellular organisation (it is acellular). Since classification is built on cells, T fits no kingdom — showing the system has limits.(v) T
(vi) If habitat alone were used, very different organisms sharing water — a fish, a whale (mammal), an octopus (mollusc) and seaweed (a plant/alga) — would be grouped together. The consequence: true relationships are hidden, just as in Aristotle's old habitat-based system.(vi)
(vii) A multicellular eukaryote with no chlorophyll that absorbs nutrients from a host externally is a fungus, not an animal — because animals ingest food while fungi absorb it (and have a chitin wall).(vii)

In-text Questions (Pause and Ponder)पाठ के सवाल (Pause and Ponder)
1. If many organisms share common features, could they also share a common ancestry?
Yes. Shared features usually mean the organisms evolved from a common ancestor; the more features they share, the closer that ancestry is likely to be.[NCERT p.231]हाँ। [NCERT p.231]
2. How can a single cell carry out all life processes when multicellular bodies need billions of cells?
In a unicellular organism the one cell is specialised to do everything — its organelles handle food, movement, waste and reproduction. Multicellular bodies divide these jobs among many cells instead.[NCERT p.236]Unicellular [NCERT p.236]
3–5. Which plant features cut dependence on water? Why do tall plants need transport tissue? How do seeds/fruits affect survival?
Vascular tissue, true roots/stems/leaves, a waxy surface, seeds and pollen reduce water dependence. Tall plants need xylem and phloem to carry water and food over long distances to every part. Seeds protect and feed the embryo and fruits spread it, so plants can survive and reach drier, farther places.[NCERT p.238]Vascular tissue, [NCERT p.238]
6. How does a beetle's external skeleton help it survive compared with an earthworm?earthworm
The hard exoskeleton protects the body, reduces water loss and anchors strong muscles, so the beetle survives dry, exposed places; the soft-bodied earthworm must stay in moist soil.[NCERT p.242]कठोर exoskeleton शरीर की रक्षा करता है, पानी का नुकसान घटाता है और मज़बूत muscles को सहारा देता है, इसलिए beetle सूखी, खुली जगहों में टिकता है; मुलायम शरीर वाले earthworm को नम मिट्टी में रहना पड़ता है।[NCERT p.242]
7–10. Is biodiversity only about variety of organisms? What features classify a new pond organism? Why do genetic studies tell us so much? How does climate change affect biodiversity?
Biodiversity also includes variety of genes and ecosystems, not just species. To classify a new organism, check cell type, number of cells, cell wall, mode of nutrition and movement. Genetic (DNA) studies compare organisms at the deepest level, revealing relationships outward features hide. Climate change shifts temperature and rainfall, destroys habitats, and pushes species that cannot adapt towards extinction.[NCERT p.230–231, 246–247]Biodiversity [NCERT p.230–231, 246–247]
Previous-Year Style Questions (PYQ)पिछले सालों जैसे सवाल (PYQ)
PYQ 1. Write the levels of classification in order from kingdom to species. (2 marks)
Kingdom → Phylum → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species.Kingdom → Phylum → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species।
PYQ 2. Name the five kingdoms of Whittaker's classification and the four criteria used. (3 marks)
Kingdoms: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia. Criteria: cell type (prokaryote/eukaryote), level of organisation (unicellular/multicellular), cell wall (present/absent and material), and mode of nutrition (autotroph/heterotroph).Kingdoms: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia। Criteria: cell type (prokaryote/eukaryote), level of organisation (unicellular/multicellular), cell wall (है/नहीं और material), और mode of nutrition (autotroph/heterotroph)।
PYQ 3. Why is the binomial name written in two parts, and what rules are followed? (3 marks)
It gives every organism one worldwide name to avoid confusion from local names. Rules: (1) two parts — genus then species; (2) genus starts with a capital, species with a small letter; (3) printed in italics, underlined when handwritten. Example: Panthera tigris.
PYQ 4. Give one reason each: (a) fungi are not plants, (b) bacteria are kept separate from Amoeba. (2 marks)
(a) Fungi are heterotrophs with a chitin cell wall and absorb food — they do not photosynthesise, so they cannot be plants. (b) Bacteria are prokaryotes (no true nucleus) → Monera, while Amoeba is a eukaryote (true nucleus) → Protista.(a) Fungi heterotrophs
PYQ 5. Compare bryophytes and pteridophytes on three points. (3 marks)
PYQ 6. What is a notochord, and how is it used to classify animals? (5 marks)
A notochord is a flexible rod-like structure along the back. Animals are first split by it: non-chordata (invertebrates) have no notochord (e.g. Porifera, Cnidaria, Arthropoda), while chordata have one. Chordates are further divided into protochordates (notochord present at least once, e.g. Amphioxus) and vertebrates, in which the notochord is replaced by a backbone. Vertebrates form five groups: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
