Rock, water, ice, air and life are not separate — they are five "spheres" of one connected machine, run by the Sun's energy and the endless cycling of matter. This final chapter ties the whole year together. Everything you studied — motion, energy, atoms, sound, life — plays out on one planet driven by solar energy and the cycling of matter. We'll see the Earth as five interacting spheres and follow water, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen as they loop through them.

2. Uneven Heating by the Sun [NCERT p.254-258]
Goal: Explain insolation, albedo, latitude heating and the atmosphere's role.Goal: insolation, albedo, latitude-heating व atmosphere की role समझाना।
The Sun's energy arrives as electromagnetic (EM) waves that cross a vacuum at the speed of light (3 × 10⁸ m/s). About 99% of it is ultraviolet (UV), visible light and infrared (IR). The energy reaching the top of the atmosphere per unit area is the solar constant ≈ 1.4 kW/m²; after clouds and gases absorb some, the surface gets about 1 kW/m² (called insolation).[NCERT p.254]Sun [NCERT p.254]

Albedo — how much a surface reflectsAlbedo — surface कितना reflect करती है
Albedo is the fraction of sunlight a surface reflects. High-albedo surfaces (snow ≈ 0.8–0.9) stay cool by reflecting light; low-albedo surfaces (black soil, ocean) absorb more and heat up. This is why polar regions are cold, dark roads get hot, and cities — full of concrete and asphalt — form "urban heat islands" warmer than the countryside.[NCERT p.256-257]Albedo [NCERT p.256-257]

Latitude & the atmosphere's blanketLatitude व atmosphere का blanket
Because the Earth is a sphere, the Sun's rays hit the equator almost straight (concentrated, warm) but the poles at a slant (spread out, cold). This uneven heating drives all winds and ocean currents. The atmosphere (78% N₂, 21% O₂) has layers: the troposphere (0–12 km, all weather, cools with height) and the stratosphere (12–50 km, holds the ozone layer, warms with height).[NCERT p.257-258]चूँकि Earth एक गोला है, Sun की rays equator पर लगभग सीधी पड़ती हैं (केंद्रित, गर्म) पर poles पर तिरछी (फैली, ठंडी)। [NCERT p.257-258]

The greenhouse effect:Greenhouse effect: the surface absorbs sunlight and re-radiates it as infrared heat. Greenhouse gases (CO₂, CH₄, water vapour) trap some of this, keeping Earth warm enough for life. But excess CO₂ from humans over-traps heat → global warming. (Venus is hotter than Mercury because of its thick greenhouse atmosphere.)[NCERT p.258] Surface Sun-light [NCERT p.258]

3. Winds & Ocean Currents [NCERT p.259-261]
Goal: See how uneven heating drives planetary winds and ocean currents.
Warm air is light and rises; cool air is dense and sinks. At the hot equator air rises (low pressure); it sinks near 30° (high pressure); this makes planetary winds that flow between belts. The Earth's spin bends them — right in the Northern Hemisphere, left in the Southern.[NCERT p.259-260]गर्म हवा हल्की होकर उठती है; ठंडी हवा घनी होकर बैठती है। [NCERT p.259-260]

Ocean currents are huge flows of seawater driven by these winds (plus temperature, salinity and the Earth's spin). They form circular gyres and carry heat from the equator to the poles — the warm North Atlantic Drift (part of the Gulf Stream) keeps European ports ice-free in winter. Currents also move nutrients that feed huge ocean ecosystems.[NCERT p.260-261]ocean currents [NCERT p.260-261]

4. Biogeochemical Cycles [NCERT p.262-265]
Goal: Trace how water, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen loop endlessly between living and non-living Earth.Goal: पानी, carbon, nitrogen व oxygen का living व non-living Earth के बीच endless cycle देखना।
A biogeochemical cycle is the constant recycling of a nutrient between the abiotic (air, water, rock) and biotic (living) parts of Earth. Because atoms are recycled, life never runs out of the elements it needs.[NCERT p.262]एक biogeochemical cycle किसी nutrient element का Earth के abiotic (हवा, पानी, rock) व biotic (living) भागों के बीच निरंतर recycling है। [NCERT p.262]

Fast cycle (days–years)तेज़ cycle (दिन–वर्ष)plants take CO₂ by photosynthesis; respiration & decomposition return it to the air.
Slow cycle (millions of yrs)धीमा cycle (लाखों वर्ष)dead life buried → coal, oil, gas; burning these releases the carbon fast.

Nitrogen cycleNitrogen cycle
Air is 78% nitrogen, but N₂ gas is unreactive — plants can't use it directly. The steps: nitrogen fixation (bacteria like Rhizobium in legume roots turn N₂ into ammonia), nitrification (bacteria make nitrites → nitrates), assimilation (plants absorb nitrates), ammonification (decomposers return nitrogen to soil), and denitrification (bacteria release N₂ back to air).[NCERT p.264]हवा 78% nitrogen है, पर N₂ गैस unreactive है — पौधे इसे सीधे use नहीं कर सकते। [NCERT p.264]

🌾 "Bread from air" — the Haber-Bosch process🌾 "हवा से रोटी" — हैबर-बॉश processToday most nitrogen is fixed artificially by the Haber-Bosch process (making ammonia from air), which produces most fertilisers and powered India's Green Revolution. Over half the nitrogen atoms in your body came through it — but overusing fertiliser degrades soil and water.
Oxygen cycleOxygen cycle
Oxygen is used up by respiration and combustion (both make CO₂) and restored by photosynthesis (which splits CO₂ + water and releases O₂). This balance keeps the air breathable.[NCERT p.264-265]Oxygen respiration [NCERT p.264-265]

Solved NCERT Questions (Revise, Reflect, Refine)हल किए गए NCERT सवाल (Revise, Reflect, Refine)
Q1. Role of biogeochemical cycles in an ecosystem?Ecosystem में biogeochemical cycles की role?
(ii) To recycle essential nutrients between the biotic and abiotic components — this keeps nutrients like carbon and nitrogen available for life.[NCERT p.267](ii) biotic व abiotic घटकों के बीच ज़रूरी nutrient elements का recycling — इससे carbon व nitrogen जैसे nutrient life के लिए उपलब्ध रहते हैं।[NCERT p.267]
Q2. What is primarily responsible for warming the Earth?Earth
(iii) The Earth's surface absorbs solar radiation, then re-radiates it as infrared heat, which is trapped by greenhouse gases (the greenhouse effect).[NCERT p.267](iii) Earth [NCERT p.267]
Q3. How does climate change affect the water cycle?
A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, so it intensifies rainfall in some regions (heavier monsoons, floods) and causes droughts in others. Melting glaciers add water to rivers and raise sea levels; intense rain increases runoff and erosion while reducing groundwater recharge.[NCERT p.267]गर्म atmosphere ज़्यादा moisture रखता है, इसलिए कुछ regions में rainfall तेज़ करता है (भारी monsoon, flood) और कहीं सूखा लाता है। [NCERT p.267]
Q4. How does albedo affect surface temperature and climate?
High-albedo surfaces (snow, ice) reflect most sunlight and stay cool, keeping polar regions cold. Low-albedo surfaces (dark soil, ocean, cities) absorb more and warm up. Losing bright ice (melting) lowers albedo, causing more absorption and further warming — a feedback that accelerates climate change.[NCERT p.267]High-albedo surfaces [NCERT p.267]
Q5. How are mountain and valley breezes formed? Grass-covered vs barren-rock mountain?
Breezes form because slopes and valleys heat and cool at different rates, so air rises over the warmer surface and flows in to replace it. A barren rocky mountain heats up more (lower albedo, no transpiration) than a grass-covered one, so its breeze would be warmer.[NCERT p.267]Breeze [NCERT p.267]
Q6. Which atmospheric layer causes weather, and why?
The troposphere (0–12 km). It is heated from the Earth's surface, so warm air rises and mixes vertically, driving winds, clouds, storms and rain.[NCERT p.267]troposphere (0–12 km)। [NCERT p.267]
Q7. Explain the nitrogen cycle. What if nitrogen were not cycled?
N₂ is fixed to ammonia (by bacteria/lightning/Haber-Bosch), nitrified to nitrates, assimilated by plants, passed to animals, returned to soil by decomposers (ammonification), and released to air by denitrification. Without cycling, soil nitrogen would run out, plants couldn't make proteins, and food chains would collapse.[NCERT p.267]N₂ ammonia [NCERT p.267]
Q8. Impacts of deforestation on the oxygen and carbon cycles?Deforestation का oxygen व carbon cycles पर effect?
Fewer trees mean less photosynthesis → less O₂ released and less CO₂ absorbed, so atmospheric CO₂ rises (worsening warming). Other effects: reduced transpiration and local rainfall, soil erosion, changed albedo, and habitat/biodiversity loss.[NCERT p.267]कम पेड़ यानी कम photosynthesis → कम O₂ छूटती व कम CO₂ सोखी जाती, इसलिए atmospheric CO₂ बढ़ती (heating बढ़ाती)। [NCERT p.267]
Q9. Path of carbon back to the atmosphere (starting from plants using CO₂)?Carbon
Plants take CO₂ → glucose (photosynthesis) → animals eat plants → both release CO₂ by respiration; dead matter is decomposed (returns CO₂), or buried over ages into fossil fuels which, when burnt (combustion), release CO₂ back to the air.[NCERT p.267]पौधे CO₂ लेते → glucose (photosynthesis) → animals पौधे खाते → दोनों respiration से CO₂ छोड़ते; मृत matter decompose (CO₂ लौटाता), या युगों में दबकर fuel बनता जो जलाने (combustion) पर CO₂ हवा में लौटाता है।[NCERT p.267]
Q10. Why is excess CO₂ undesirable even though plants need it?
A little CO₂ keeps Earth warm enough for life, but excess CO₂ over-traps heat (enhanced greenhouse effect), causing global warming, melting ice, rising seas, extreme weather, and ocean acidification that harms marine life. Balance is what matters.[NCERT p.267]थोड़ी CO₂ Earth को life-लायक़ गर्म रखती है, पर extra CO₂ बहुत ज़्यादा heat रोकती है (बढ़ा greenhouse effect), जिससे global heating, बर्फ़ पिघलना, sea चढ़ना, चरम weather, व ocean acidification होता है जो marine life को नुकसान पहुँचाता है। [NCERT p.267]
Q11. How is heat lost from Earth's surface, and why does it matter?
The warmed surface re-radiates heat as infrared radiation back toward space. This outgoing heat balances the incoming sunlight; greenhouse gases trap part of it to keep Earth warm. If too much is trapped, the planet overheats; if too little, it would freeze — so this loss regulates Earth's temperature.[NCERT p.267]गर्म surface heat को infrared radiation के रूप में space की ओर फिर radiate करती है। [NCERT p.267]
Q12. If Earth were a flat disc instead of a sphere, how would heating differ?
On a flat disc facing the Sun, rays would strike almost every part at the same angle, so heating would be far more uniform — no strong equator-to-pole temperature difference. That difference (from the spherical shape) is what drives our winds and currents, so a flat Earth would have very different, weaker global circulation.[NCERT p.267]Sun [NCERT p.267]
Q13. A rise in atmospheric temperature — effect on cryosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere?Atmospheric temperature वृद्धि — ice-, water-, biosphere पर effect?
Cryosphere: glaciers and polar ice melt. Hydrosphere: sea levels rise, rivers swell then dwindle, rainfall patterns shift. Biosphere: habitats are lost, species migrate or die out, coral and plankton suffer — biodiversity declines.[NCERT p.268]cryosphere: glacier [NCERT p.268]
Q14. How does the atmosphere keep Earth's temperature suitable for life?
Two ways: (1) it absorbs harmful incoming radiation — the ozone layer blocks UV, and clouds/gases absorb part of the sunlight; (2) it traps outgoing infrared heat via greenhouse gases, preventing Earth from freezing. Without the atmosphere, Earth would be far too cold for life.[NCERT p.268]दो तरीक़े: (1) यह harmful आती radiation सोखता है — ozone layer UV रोकती, clouds/gases कुछ धूप सोखतीं; (2) यह बाहर जाता infrared heat greenhouse gases से रोकता है, Earth को जमने से बचाता। [NCERT p.268]
Q15. Describe how the spheres interrelate in a delicate balance, with an example.
The spheres continuously exchange energy and matter, so a change in one ripples through all. Example: warmer air (atmosphere) melts glaciers (cryosphere) → rivers and seas rise (hydrosphere) → coastal soil erodes (geosphere) → habitats and crops are lost (biosphere). Their balance keeps Earth livable.[NCERT p.268]Sphere [NCERT p.268]
Previous-Year Style Questions (PYQ)पिछले सालों जैसे सवाल (PYQ)
PYQ 1. Name the five spheres of the Earth system. (2 marks)
Geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere and biosphere.Geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere
PYQ 2. Define albedo. Which has a higher albedo — snow or black soil? (2 marks)
Albedo is the fraction of incoming sunlight a surface reflects. Snow (≈ 0.8–0.9) has a much higher albedo than black soil.
PYQ 3. Name the bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen in legume roots. (1 mark)
Rhizobium (found in the root nodules of legumes).Rhizobium (legume पौधों की जड़-nodules में)।
PYQ 4. What is eutrophication and what causes it? (2 marks)
Excess fertiliser (nitrates) running into rivers and lakes triggers rapid algal blooms; when the algae die and decay they use up the dissolved oxygen, killing fish and other aquatic life — this is eutrophication.
The Journey Beyond — Ready for New Horizons
Try it: trace one meal (say roti and dal) — where did its carbon come from (photosynthesis), and its nitrogen (bacteria or the Haber-Bosch process)? Or compare monsoon rainfall in your district across the 1980s and 2020s using IMD data. This chapter closes Class 9 science — you have journeyed from inside cells and atoms, through forces, energy and sound, to the living planet itself. In Class 10 you'll explore how life sustains itself, how traits pass on, how reactions transform matter, and how electricity, magnetism and light power our world. Keep asking why, testing how, and wondering what if — the next discovery could be yours.[NCERT p.268-269]करके देखो: एक भोजन (जैसे रोटी और दाल) का पता लगाओ — इसका carbon कहाँ से आया (photosynthesis), और nitrogen (bacteria या हैबर-बॉश process)? [NCERT p.268-269]
